At last, my delivery arrived. 

After putting in a tampon, I stuffed my stained 

underwear into my bag. 

“I’m heading out now… You can ask the motel to change the sheets.” 

“It’s okay. Don’t worry about it.” 

Then he asked, “Do you get bad cramps on your period?” 

“The first couple of days, yeah.” 

Adrian took off his jacket and tied it around my waist. 

“I’ll remember that.” 

Why was he memorizing that? 

Was it so he’d know not to ask me to a motel when I 

was on my period? 

Adrian insisted on walking me home, and he didn’t 

leave until he saw me go inside. 

Later, I heard that the guys Sebastian had sent to cause trouble got chased out by the local punks in the 

projects. 

I knew Adrian was still in school, which meant he 

probably wanted to keep his ties to the mob hidden. 

That was why he kept tolerating Sebastian’s bullying again and again. 

Besides, at that point he was only a capo. For the time 

being, he still couldn’t go head–to–head with 

Sebastian. 

My father was a state senator, and my family’s power 

network was enormous. 

Sebastian’s plan had failed that night. 

But he came up with another one almost immediately. 

He was obsessed with getting rid of Adrian, because 

only then could he take first place and avoid being 

beaten by our father. 

During P.E., I sat in the classroom with my earbuds in, working on a practice test. 

That was when I overheard Sebastian talking to Claire, 

my best friend and the girl who had a crush on him. 

“Adrian’s on equipment duty today. Follow him into 

the equipment room. Once you’re inside, take your 

shirt off, throw your arms around him, and scream that he groped you.” 

There was only one slot in the physics competition. 

The school had chosen Adrian for it. 

Sebastian had already lied to our father and claimed 

the school picked him instead because he was afraid of 

making him angry. 

In my last life, Adrian had been beaten deaf and spent a 

month recovering at home. 

Sebastian took his place in the competition. 

But this time, because I had intervened, Adrian never 

got hurt. 

Lately, Sebastian had been harassing Adrian nonstop because he wanted to steal that competition spot from 

him. 

Claire didn’t want to do it. 

“I… I can’t.” 

There was a rustle of fabric. 

Sebastian had taken his shirt off. 

“Sebastian…” 

Claire saw the wounds across his back and burst into 

tears. 

“If Adrian stays at Fairmont Academy, no matter how hard I work, I’ll always be second. Every time, my dad hits me worse than before. I can’t take it anymore.” 

“Claire, save me.” 

That was a devastating thing for a girl like her to hear. 

She thought she was the one person who could save 

him, and she was willing to sacrifice herself for that 

fantasy. 

“Okay.” 

I had to stop this. 

If Adrian got framed as a rapist, he would be finished. 

I ran to the equipment room. 

No one was inside yet. 

When I heard someone coming, I hid behind a row of 

shelves. 

The moment Claire stepped in, she pulled off her top 

and moved toward Adrian to throw herself at him. 

Adrian shoved her away instantly. 

She clutched her chest and was just about to scream 

when I rushed out and covered her mouth. 

The three of us stared at each other. 

The whole scene was absurdly dramatic. 

“I’ve been here the whole time.” 

“Aren’t you supposed to like my brother? So why are you throwing yourself at Adrian?” 

Claire hurriedly put her shirt back on and started 

crying. 

I put on my most innocent expression and said, “My 

dad was thinking about arranging something between 

our families. Since you like Adrian, I’ll go home and tell 

him to drop the idea.” 

“No. Don’t. Please. I like Sebastian!” 

“Then what exactly are you doing?” 

Claire grabbed my hand. 

“Elena, please don’t ask. Will you just keep this a secret 

for me? I swear I’ll never do anything like this again.” 

My goal was to block Sebastian from using Claire to 

frame Adrian. 

“Okay.” 

Claire left. 

Now only Adrian and I were left in the equipment room. 

“Your brother put her up to this.” 

At the mention of Sebastian, a look of disgust crossed 

Adrian’s face. 

“This is the third time you’ve saved me.” 

“You and your brother are weird. You two obviously care about each other so much, but one of you is trying to ruin me while the other keeps protecting me.” 

Adrian stepped toward me, and I backed away step by 

step. 

His arms were so long that he caught the back of my 

neck in one hand with ease, leaned in close, and spoke right against my ear. 

“If it had been you tempting me just now, I really would’ve done something I couldn’t take back.”
