I didn’t return to the apartment; instead, I took a cab and booked a room at a hotel.

Then I contacted a moving company and had them go over to clear out my belongings.

That evening, my mother called.

As soon as I picked up, I heard her sharp accusations:

“Maya, what are you being so dramatic about now?

“Chase and Sloane only made a small mistake. Is it really worth holding onto this forever?”

“They’ve already apologized to me. Get back here right now!”

I listened quietly.

Once she finished her outburst, I calmly uttered three words:

“It is worth it.”

My mother sounded exasperated on the other end:

“Maya! What right do you have-”

“I have every right.”

I interrupted her with a cold sneer:

“Mrs.Sterling, do you think that as long as you keep belittling and demeaning me, I’ll stay insecure

and never dare to defy a single word you say?”

She let out a sharp, short intake of breath.

“What are you talking about? I never…”

I continued:

“Whether you did or not doesn’t concern me.”

“All you need to know is that your opinions and your feelings no longer have any impact on me.”

“If you like Sloane so much, you can go ask her father right now if you can adopt her as your own daughter.”

I couldn’t help but laugh again, wiping away a tear that fell on the back of my hand.

“In nine months, you might even get to be a ‘God-grandma’.”

For the first time in my life, I heard panic in my mother’s voice.

“What grandchild? Sloane is pregnant?”

“Maya, Mom didn’t look down on you. I’ve always just wanted you to be better.”

“I said I don’t care.”

My voice was calm and clinical.

“The little girl who loved you grew up a long time ago. Now, she only loves herself.”

“Don’t bother me.”

I hung up and blocked her immediately.

I collapsed onto the hotel bed and slept until I lost track of time.

The next day, I went to the office to handle my resignation and handover.

Chase was waiting early at the entrance, holding a bag of breakfast.

Seeing me, he hurried forward with a somewhat fawning smile:

“Maya, I bought your favorite…”

I took it and threw it directly into the trash can.

“I don’t know. I don’t have a ‘favorite’-maybe it’s Sloane’s favorite.”

Chase’s face turned pale for a moment, but he quickly forced a smile:

“It’s okay. I’ll buy something else next time.”

I ignored him and walked past, leaving him outside the company’s security gate.

Due to the nature of my work, the off-boarding process took several days.

Every day, I saw Chase standing downstairs like a statue, gazing up toward my office window.

A colleague teased me, not knowing the situation:

“What’s up? Trouble in paradise?”

“You two were so inseparable before. You even turned down several overseas promotions for him.

What could be so bad that you can’t work it out?”

I gave a faint “mm-hmm.”

“We can’t work it out. He cheated.”

The colleague choked up, speaking awkwardly:

“Oh… I’m so sorry…”

“And he cheated with my best friend.”

The colleague went completely silent.

The next time Chase tried to pester me at the office, the colleague went out of their way to call

security for me.

However, despite his absence for a few days, the front desk received fresh Sterling Stars every

day.

I told the receptionist to block the number and throw everything away.

Finally, Chase cornered me at the company entrance, looking haggard:

“Maya, is there really no chance for me?”

I curled my lip sarcastically.

“What kind of chance do you still want?”

“I’m not so desperate that I have to accept a man who’s been tainted.”

Chase flinched as if struck by an electric shock.

He probably remembered that I am someone with severe emotional “cleanliness” requirement.

“Then what about Sloane?”

He called out desperately behind me as I walked away:

“Do you not even want Sloane anymore?”

“No. I don’t want her either.”

I didn’t look back.
