On the day I finished my resignation paperwork, Sloane appeared at my hotel room door.

She had lost a lot of weight and looked terrible.

The first thing she said was:

“I had the abortion.”

I was silent for a long time before finally letting her in.

She impatiently pulled a drawing from her bag.

“Maya, do you remember this? The Time Capsule we buried under the old oak tree in elementary

school. I dug it up.”

My gaze paused for a second when I noticed a lot of dirt under Sloane’s fingernails.

She was a neat freak, yet she had rushed here without cleaning herself up.

I turned my attention to the drawing.

Two girls holding hands, running through a field, laughing freely.

Beneath it was a line of text:

“Maya and Sloane will be together forever.”

The handwriting was childish, yet it held the innocent promise of two children.

I remembered many things.

When I was young, I used to feel insecure because of my mother’s constant belittling.

Sloane, our neighbor, had been a pretty girl with striking features since childhood, while I was just an unremarkable weed by the roadside.

Because I was too quiet, I was bullied by the local kids.

I would go home crying to tell my mother, but she would only frown and ask:

“Why do they only bully you? Have you ever thought about what’s wrong with you?”

I would tremble, and from then on, I never said another word to her.

Back then, the person who descended like a hero was Sloane.

She had a face so beautiful it was almost sharp, and a personality as piercing as a blade.

At first, she couldn’t stand seeing me bullied and ordered me to follow her.

When I finally found the courage to fight back, we became inseparable friends.

Sloane used to joke:

“We’re a pair brought together by the god of destiny. I wonder what jerk will be lucky enough to

steal you away from me one day.”

But now.

I curled my lip; I wanted to laugh but couldn’t make a sound.

I could only look down at the yellowed drawing.

The two little girls were still holding hands; nothing had changed in over a decade.

But because it had been buried too long, there was a large stain on the white dress.

Just like our relationship.

Unknowingly, Sloane’s face was covered in tears.

Her voice was broken:

“Maya, I really know I was wrong. I shouldn’t have been so blinded, I shouldn’t have kept it from you

for so long.”

She sobbed, a far cry from the girl who once descended like a goddess to save me.

In the past, I wouldn’t have been able to stand seeing her look so fragile.

But now, it didn’t matter.

She squeezed out broken sentences from her throat:

“Maya, I really can’t let you go.”

“Can you give me another chance?”

“It’s just a man. Why should he be allowed to tear our friendship apart?”

I shook my head and called her name seriously.

“Sloane.”

Sloane stood up abruptly, as if sensing something, and rushed out the door without even gathering

her things.

“Can I come find you again tomorrow?”

I caught her hand and cruelly whispered those words in her ear:

“I’m leaving.”

I let her slump to the floor, murmuring:

“No, please, Maya, don’t go…”

I didn’t look back once.
