The CEO Postponed Our Wedding Nine Times For Her Chapter 02

“Maya!”

Chase was the first to notice, rushing over in a panic to hold me.

“Are you okay? Can you hear me?”

Sloane looked equally terrified, hurriedly using her silk handkerchief to pressure my wound.

“I’m sorry, I’m so sorry… it’s all my fault…”

She couldn’t stop her tears from falling.

Chase’s arms around me stiffened for a moment. The next second, I heard him speak with forced nonchalance.

“It’s not your fault. I might have been the one who threw it. Don’t blame yourself.”

The two of them, who had just been fighting like enemies, looked at each other. There was an unspoken, tangled intensity in their gaze that I couldn’t decipher.

I began to tremble slightly.

I couldn’t tell if my forehead hurt more, or my heart.

Chase was the first to look away.

He suddenly scooped me up and dashed toward the exit.

However, when we reached the car, Sloane habitually opened the passenger door.

Chase’s grip tightened on me, and he let out a pointed cough.

Sloane seemed to snap out of a dream and forced a smile at me:

“It’s for Maya.”

“Chase, you didn’t think I was going to sit there, did you?”

“Watch what you’re doing; don’t let Maya bump her head.”

The two of them avoided each other’s eyes with a strange, mutual understanding.

I pulled open the glove compartment, and a familiar lipstick suddenly fell out.

It broke the deathly silence in the car.

I picked it up and effortlessly recognized it as the custom birthday gift I had given Sloane last year.

Because it was bespoke, there was no mistaking it.

I tossed it into the back seat:

“Sloane, you forgot this.”

Sloane’s face turned pale instantly.

After a long silence, she explained cautiously:

“I must have left that there six months ago.”

“Maya, you know… things were complicated back then…”

I watched the scenery receding outside the window in silence.

Why did she bother lying?

Just last month, I had seen that very lipstick in her everyday handbag.

She loved it too much to have gone six months without using it.

Sloane seemed to realize how absurd her excuse sounded, and her voice trailed off.

The car returned to that initial, suffocating silence.

Finally, Chase spoke:

“Maya, are you still hung up on what happened back then?”
