“Maya, why… why did you come out?”

Chase tried to act as if nothing was wrong as he reached for my hand, but the cold sweat on his forehead betrayed his guilt.

I sidestepped him, my stomach churning.

I couldn’t help leaning against the wall and gagging.

Sloane asked in a trembling voice:

“Maya, when did you get here?”

“How much did you hear?”

I pinched my palm hard, my limbs feeling numb.

I looked at Sloane’s stomach.

Chase stepped forward to pull me into an embrace his tone forced and cheerful.

“I can explain, Maya. Let’s go back to the room first

“Use your time to go worry about Sloane’s morning sickness!”

I wrenched myself away and delivered a sharp slap to his face.

“Chase, do I look that easy to fool?”

“Once Sloane’s baby is born, were you planning to just bring it home and raise it under my name?”

“How wonderful-one is the boyfriend I loved to death, and the other is a friend I’ve known for over

twenty years.”

“Is it fun, teaming up to deceive me?”

The tears finally broke through, hitting the floor one by one.

My palm was numb from the impact, but I felt no pain there.
