The hospital room fell silent for a moment.

Chase opened his mouth:

“I’m sorry. I might have still been thinking back to six months ago when I was cooking.”

Six months ago, they hadn’t yet emerged from their trauma.

The culinary skills that used to belong to me alone had unknowingly been shared with my best friend.

But I could only swallow the bitterness.

I smiled, my throat feeling tight:

“Then you two should just be together. Don’t worry about me.”

Sloane’s expression changed, and she playfully punched my shoulder as if she were offended.

“Don’t say such disgusting things!”

“Chase and I are naturally incompatible. If we were actually together, wouldn’t we just fight every day?”

“Besides, you two are a match made in heaven. Didn’t you even have a top-tier astrologer map out your birth charts to prove you were soulmates?”

Sloane rattled on, listing dozens of reasons why Chase and I would grow old together.

Gradually, Chase fell silent again, his gaze lingering on Sloane for a long time.

I was stung by that burning look, and my eyes throbbed with a dull ache.

Seeing the awkward atmosphere, the nurse tried to lighten the mood:

“Miss Maya is right. With Miss Sloane’s looks, what kind of man couldn’t she find?”

“I even saw her give it out to two people yesterday.”

“Come outside with me.”

“You’re not going. One of you stays here with me.”

“I have something to discuss with her.”

“Maya, just for a few minutes. We’ll be right back.”

He didn’t even bother making up a proper excuse.

I gave a self-deprecating laugh.

After they left, I quietly got up and followed them.

Sloane’s voice was strained:

“How many times have I told you not to call me like that in front of Maya!”

“If she finds out… what will we do?”

Chase gripped her shoulders, standing very close, his voice low and suppressed:

“Then what about you? Why did you give your number to other men?”

Sloane shoved him away, letting the tears fall:

“Then what do you want? Am I supposed to stay celibate for the rest of my life?”

“Is it not enough that I have to watch you and Maya get married and have kids? Do you have to trap my future and my child’s future too?!”

My ears erupted with a loud ringing.

In that moment, I could hear nothing else.

Chase was also stunned, speaking in disbelief:

“What child? You’re pregnant?”

“Didn’t we agree that we would call a truce by the tenth wedding attempt and each give Maya a happy life?”

Sloane’s face was covered in tears, her voice trembling:

“Yes, a month ago, I found out I was pregnant.”

“But you and Maya were busy with the wedding then, and I didn’t know how to tell you…”

She knelt on the ground, her voice broken and desperate:

“I’ll go get an abortion. That will solve the problem.”

“No!”

There was equal agony in Chase’s tone:

“Keep the baby.”

“Even if we can’t be together in this life, at least we’ll have something to remember us by…”

They held each other and sobbed.

For a moment, I actually felt like I was the villain in their story.

I stepped out from the corner, numb.

My voice was flat.

“Keep the baby. I’m leaving.”
