Rue, classmates, and Mr. Levinson went to the hospital to visit Kat.

“Take it easy, Kat. Focus on healing. You can try again next year.” Mr. Levinson said.

“You’re smart. You’ll get into your dream school.” Kat’s friends said.

Kat lay with a blank face. When she saw me, she broke down.

“The patient needs rest. You should leave.”

We stood to go.

“Jules! I need to talk to you!” Kat shouted angrily.

Rue looked worried. “I’ll wait outside.”

I approached Kat’s bed. “Out with it.”

“You got lucky. Otherwise you’d be the one lying here.”

“Lucky? How could you be so sure it’d be me? Was I your target from the start?”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

I lowered my voice. “That rider’s your cousin. Your uncle’s son.”

“How did you-” Kat stared at me, shocked.

“Know?” I smiled coldly. “I’m careful this time around.”

“You think if the cops talk to your cousin, he’ll keep quiet?”

Kat screamed. “Bitch! Why won’t you die?”

“Sucks to lose, doesn’t it, Kat? Pathetic.”

“Ahhh! Bitch! I’ll kill you!”

Kat thrashed, screaming.

“Jules!” It was Hunter’s voice. “Is it true what you said?”

The room went silent. Hunter stood behind me, face pained.

“No, no, it’s not true! Hunter, listen to me-” Kat cried.

“Tell me the truth!” Hunter pulled me close and shouted.

“Ask your precious Kat. Whether I’m lying doesn’t matter to you.” I pulled free and walked out.

My phone buzzed. A text from Hunte.

Days blurred. One early morning, Rue called.

“Jules, I killed it! Definitely heading to Randall City med school! Did you check your score?”

“Not up yet.”

“No way. Sanford City’s gonna beg you to go.”
