The teacher walked in with a stack of tests.

“Class, first, congratulations to Kat Perez. A huge jump from fifth to second in the grade.”

The class applauded.

Kat dropped her sick act and stood to thank everyone.

“Thanks, everyone. And Mr. Levinson, I really appreciate your help. I’ll keep up the good work.”

Mr. Levinson beamed at her.

“First place again goes to Hunter Bennett. Keep this up, and both Kat and Hunter are headed to Sanford City.”

More applause. Students murmured.

“Hunter and Kat are perfect together.”

“We also have one student who improved a bit, Jules Schafer. She moved from last place all the way up to fifth from last. Good job.”

The class erupted in laughter.

“Like she even has a chance against Hunter? Delusional.”

“She’s only here ’cause her family has money.”

“Fifth from the bottom’s nothing but a drag on our class average.”

“Shhh… don’t let her hear.”

It was true. In my previous life, I threw my life away for Hunter.

The year my mom died, I saw Hunter as my only light.

When I was sad, he made faces to make me laugh.

When I missed my mom, he held me and whispered, “I’ve got you.”

When I wandered into the street and almost got hit, he pushed me out of the way. A scar still marked his arm.

But when did all that change?

He promised, “Jules, no matter what happens, I’ll protect you. No one will hurt you.”

He said, “Jules, I want to be your one and only. Forever.”

So Hunter, I gave you everything. What do you owe me for all the pain you put me through?

The laughter continued.

Mr. Levinson tapped the desk for quiet.

“Alright, let’s pass out these tests and go over them.”

I stared at the crossedout answers and smiled bitterly.

Good thing I earned my Sanford City grad degree late in life just to survive.

When I told Hunter the good news, he said, “You’re too old. It won’t matter.”

Turns out, it mattered a lot.
