The place was a sketchy diner near school.

Kat and Hunter were already there.

Rue and I sat down.

“Rue’s here too!” Kat smiled. “Waiter, an extra place setting.”

The owner set down clean utensils and greeted us warmly.

The second I met his eyes, memories flooded back. I’d know him anywhere, Kat’s uncle.

In my previous life, after Hunter took my money, Kat’s family got rich.

They bought her parents a mansion and gave her uncle a restaurant.

When I went to confront them, Kat told her uncle to lock me up. He tried to force me to marry his mentally

slow son.

My stomach churned.

“You okay?”

Rue and Hunter asked at the same time.

Sweat rolled down my face. I squeezed Rue’s hand. “I don’t feel well.”

Hunter picked up a cup and patted my back. “Skipped meals again?” He placed a pill in my palm. “Take care

of yourself.”

I stared at the pill. “You still carry these.”

“Habit.”

“Thanks.” I pushed his hand away. “I have water.”

Kat frowned at Hunter caring for me but forced a smile. “Jules, I’ll order something gentle on your stomach.”

Before she could, voices called out.

“Jules?”

“No way! It’s really her!”

“You’re my idol!”

A group of kids swarmed me, asking for autographs.

I turned to Kat. “Looks like we’re not eating. How about a rain check for after graduation? My treat.”

I pulled Rue to her feet. Kat tried to block us but got shoved aside by fans.

Kat panicked. Her hand tightened around her phone. Seconds later, a motorcycle roared nearby.

Fans still surrounded me. The crowd grew.

I stepped outside. The motorcycle got closer. I saw the rider, Kat’s mentally slow cousin. That was her plan

all along.

I yelled, “Watch out for the motorcycle!”

Heads turned.

“Look out!”

Someone dove. The bike swerved and crashed into the diner.

Screams erupted!

Kat’s leg was pinned under the bike. Her body crushed against the wall.

Chaos. “Call 911!”

Her uncle knelt screaming her name, dialing frantically, yelling at his son. “You idiot!”
