On my way back, I passed Horizon Plaza.

A row of massive digital billboards stood outside the plaza.

Finn had been doing a series of business interviews recently.

Every time I passed by, I could see that dangerously beautiful face of his.

In front of the cameras, he had an entirely different persona.

On-screen, Finn was decisive, cold, and arrogantly detached.

That languid, untouchable air had earned him the nickname Wall Street’s Ice Blade.

After finishing my master’s degree, I started working toward my PhD while teaching at Kingston University.

Through Finn, I could always get access to the newest and most cutting-edge business cases.

The course material was difficult, but I could invite major industry figures to break those cases down for my students one by one.

Finn also often used his own experience to make the theories I learned from books feel grounded in reality.

Because of that, every one of my classes was packed. This year, my course was even voted the most valuable class in Kingston University’s business school.

He did not just hand me a fish. He taught me how to fish.

After we started dating, he began encouraging me to step into the business world on my own.

He would provide the resources, and I could decide whether to share any profits with him.

I refused.

“That feels like I’d be getting something for nothing.”

He was very rational as he talked me through it.

“I’m going to be your husband. There’s nothing wrong with investing in my wife.

“And even if I weren’t, I see your ability. You can treat me as an angel investor. I’m paying for your talent.”

I told him I wanted to be an independent woman.

He gave a low laugh. “How often do you hear people talk about being an independent man?”

I shook my head.

He said, “People with privilege rarely realize they have it. Look at men. They accept homes and cars from their parents, resources from their peers, and opportunities from their bosses. Why does no one call those men dependent? Men like that are everywhere. The same applies to women. There is nothing wrong with using the resources available to you. If no one questions it when he does it, then no one gets to question it when she does it.

“Marina, I know exactly what kind of power society has given me, but people who hold power almost never recognize that they hold it.

“I tend to think that once men realized the old rules could no longer fully restrain women, they became afraid of women entering the arena and competing with them. So they created new chains instead. They turned independence into a slogan and used it to make women step back from competing for resources, because women have been taught to be considerate, fair, and afraid of taking too much.

“So don’t feel guilty. Having resources and refusing to use them is what would be foolish.”

It hit me like a revelation.

My parents were one example. Because of my mother’s health, I was their only child.

They believed only a son could be there for them at the end of their lives, so after I entered high school, they stopped paying much attention to me and planned to leave all their property to my male cousin.

After I married Finn, they naturally treated him like their own son.

It was Finn who showed them through his actions that he was family to them only because I was worth cherishing.

“You don’t need to flatter me. Without Marina, I would have no relationship with you at all.

“I will only live peacefully with people who cherish my wife.

“If you can’t learn to treat her like someone precious, I don’t have the time to teach you, and I certainly don’t have the time to deal with you.”

These lessons about life and power had actually come from a supernatural being.

Sure enough, not having grown up inside humanity’s stupid systems of oppression really did make one’s mind clearer.
