After hearing me describe what had happened, Gideon did not question me at all. Instead, he sent me a picture.

Gideon: [Marina, look at this entry from the family records.]

According to the family records, the blood of certain people in our family could strengthen supernatural beings.

That was why those creatures kept people like us alive and used us to build their power.

Gideon sent me another message.

Gideon: [Marina, don’t make any sudden attempt to leave. He has marked you, which means he can track you anywhere. One of our female ancestors was once kept by a supernatural creature.]

The family archive described it like this:

[The beings that lived deep in the mountains were unnaturally beautiful and dangerously seductive. Though the family had strict warnings against them, one young woman still fell under their spell and was taken into the mountains, where she was kept for years.]

By the time the family found that woman, the creature had already drained her blood and life force until nothing remained but dry bones.

Gideon told me that beings like that had no humanity.

That female ancestor had been bitten until her body was riddled with wounds and her face was unrecognizable. Even after death, she was not allowed peace.

If the family had not taken pity on her and risked their lives to recover her body, there would not have been a single bone left to bury.

Gideon warned me again and again.

Gideon: [Before I head back, don’t do anything that might make that creature suspicious. If you can, observe his weaknesses in secret and report them to me one by one. We’ll decide what to do once I’m back in New York.]

I still wanted to ask for specifics, but he did not seem to understand nonhumans like Finn very well. He even sounded afraid of Finn.

Whenever he mentioned him, he kept emphasizing that I should go along with Finn and not run.

But when facing the unknown, staying still was the only option I had.

Gideon probably had his own plan.

After finishing the call downstairs at the hospital, I drove home.

The important thing now was not to let Finn suspect anything.
