The moment I opened the door and saw Mom’s face, the smile froze on my lips.

“How did you find me?”

Mom looked visibly travel–worn, her complexion pale and drawn.

Her lips parted as if to speak, then pressed shut again.

In the past, I was always the one doing the talking between us.

Now I just stared at her in total silence.

Amidst the heavy quiet, Rhonda’s puzzled voice called out from behind me. “Hailee, who is it?”

She hummed a little tune, casually joking, “If it’s a friend, invite them in! If it’s an enemy, kick them

to the curb!”

My lips moved, but no sound came.

Suddenly, I felt a soft brushing against my legs.

Looking down, I saw Goldie squeezing through the doorway.

She positioned herself directly in front of me, baring her teeth with a low growl and letting out sharp barks.

It was a clear signal that the visitor wasn’t welcome.

Hearing the barks, Rhonda dropped the bowl of freshly sliced mangoes she was preparing for me

and hurried over.

“What’s wrong? What happened?”

Mom and I both turned to look at her.

Rhonda’s eyes darted between the two of us, finally settling on Mom’s face.

A few seconds later, realization dawned on her.

She pointed a finger at Mom, her voice ringing out loud. “Are you Hailee’s mother–the one who barely speaks to her?”

Feeling insulted, Mom’s face darkened instantly.

She grabbed my wrist, attempting to drag me away

I understood–she was angry that I’d left without a word.

But I’d already made up my mind to leave her behind.

For the first time in twenty years, I rejected her, forcefully yanking my hand out of her grip.

At the same time, Goldie shifted into an aggressive stance, ready to pounce on my command.

Mom stumbled back from the force of my rejection

She looked up at me, her face hurt.

Rhonda stepped up, planting herself directly between Mom and me, her tone dripping with mock

indifference.

“Look here. Hailee is a member of the Knight family now. Instead of staying home to baby your precious younger daughter, why did you drag yourself all the way across the ocean to us?”

Rhonda scanned Mom’s haggard appearance with a cold sneer.

“Must have taken a lot of effort to track us down, huh?”

“Since you’ve played favorites for over twenty years why not just stick with it for the rest of your life? Who are you trying to guilt–trip with that betrayed, regretful act?”

Mom said nothing, her eyes locked onto me.

I understood what they were saying. But I stayed silent and looked away.

Rhonda went on and on, but seeing no response from Mom, her patience wore thin.

“You really are a mute, aren’t you? Talking to you is like talking to a brick wall. No wonder Hailee

walked away from you! Get lost and stay away from us!”

With that, Rhonda moved to shut the door.

Right as the door was about to lock, a hand jammed into the crack, stopping it cold.

The heavy door could easily shatter a bone upon impact.

Rhonda gasped in horror, yanking the door back open as she snapped, “Are you out of your mind?”

Mom stared at me, her lips slowly parting.

“Hailee… come home with me.”
