The next day, our whole family went to pick up our custom wedding dresses.

When we arrived, the clerk looked apologetic.

“I’m so sorry, but the dress you reserved was bought by another customer a few days ago for a much higher price.”

My wedding was the day after tomorrow. How was I supposed to get married without a dress?

I fought to keep my voice steady.

“Do you have any sense of professionalism? I already paid the deposit!”

The clerk apologized repeatedly.

“I’m deeply sorry, miss. It was the manager’s decision. You’re welcome to choose any other gown in our store—would that be acceptable?”

That dress was the one Morris and I had spent weeks searching the entire city for.

They had no right to sell it out from under me.

I trembled with rage. “I don’t accept that. You need to give me an explanation and give me back my dress!”

I stepped forward, but Mom grabbed my wrist.

I looked back.

Her face was completely blank as she shook her head. “Let it go…”

The next second, Charlee’s scream echoed from down the hall.

“There’s a diamond missing from my gown!”

Mom’s composure vanished instantly. She rushed to Charlee’s side.

Charlee pouted, tears welling up in her eyes. “My dress is supposed to have 999 diamonds. I just counted, and there are only 998!”

Another employee hurried to explain, “It might have fallen off during transport…”

But Charlee wouldn’t hear it. Tears streamed down her cheeks.

Mom’s eyes widened in fury. She snapped right at the staff.

“That gown comes with 999 stones—so 999 it must be! Missing even one is a breach of contract!”

“If you don’t replace that stone today, your boutique will be shut down by tomorrow!”

“But we don’t have any spare diamonds in the shop right now…”

Growing up, Mom had always prioritized dignity and composure above all else.

This was the very first time I had ever seen her screaming at someone in public over a single missing diamond.

And yet here she was, throwing decorum to the wind for Charlee.

In that moment, something in me died for good.

The clerk assisting me glanced nervously between Mom and me. “Miss, about your dress…”

I gave a dry, hollow smile and pointed at random. “I’ll just take that one.”

“Of course.”

As the clerk began packing the gown, Mom noticed us.

“It’s just one missing diamond, isn’t it? Just pry one off my older daughter’s dress and sew it onto Charlee’s!”

Before anyone could react, she yanked the largest diamond off the chest of my new gown and threw it at the clerk.

“Sew it on. Now!”

The employee froze, then silently nodded and hurried off.

A heavy ache tightened in my chest..

Charlee burst into a bright smile as Mom gently stroked her cheek.

The sight left my eyes burning with tears.

“Why, Mom?” I asked, my voice hollow. “Why do I always have to give up everything?”

Hearing my voice, Mom instantly shut her mouth and looked away.

Charlee seemed to catch herself, turning to me with an apology.

“I’m sorry, Hailee… but it was Mom’s idea.”

“Besides, it’s not like you actually liked that dress anyway…”

Bitterness flooded my throat.

I looked at my mother’s blank, unreadable face and swallowed every word I wanted to say.

Never mind. The day after tomorrow, I’d be married—and I was never coming back.
