I Ordered A Puppy Got Two Incubi Instead Chapter 04

One day, I came home and found Xavier covered in blood.

He sat crouched in the corner without making a sound, looking half-dead.

The seller had mentioned before that incubi could function independently in human society. They had jobs, income, normal lives. Most of the time they disguised themselves as human, only revealing their ears and tails after forming a Bond with someone.

I’d looked into both of their jobs before.

Adrian worked as a professional organizer.

Xavier worked underground fights.

The injuries were probably from the ring.

I grabbed the first aid kit and crouched beside him, feeling a pang of sympathy.

The second I touched him, though, he exploded.

“Don’t pretend you care!” he snarled. “Whether I live or die has nothing to do with you!”

He shoved me hard enough that I fell onto the floor.

That finally snapped my patience.

“Xavier! I’m not endlessly tolerant!”

I honestly thought I’d been patient enough with him.

No matter how awful his attitude had gotten lately, I’d never once fought back or raised my voice at him.

This was the first time he’d outright rejected my touch, even while his wounds kept bleeding.

Furious, I slapped him.

The crack echoed through the room.

Then everything went silent.

Xavier stopped resisting.

As I disinfected and bandaged his injuries, I noticed his eyes had turned an eerie green. A low rumbling sound vibrated in his throat, almost like a purr.

Meanwhile, the tail behind him kept sneaking over to brush against my leg.

…What was he doing now?

I rubbed my temples.

Xavier was nothing like the incubi people described online.

After dinner, I decided I seriously needed to contact the seller again and see if there was some kind of incubus instruction manual.

Except when I searched for the store again, the entire shop was gone.

Gone.

???

Back when I bought them, I’d picked the cheapest listing available.

Please don’t tell me I got scammed.

It hadn’t even been a month. How did the whole store disappear already?

Couldn’t they at least have left behind a damn user guide for demon ownership?

Adrian walked into my room carrying a glass of warm milk. When he saw my exhausted expression, concern softened his features.

“What’s wrong, Master?”

I pressed my lips together.

“The shop I bought you from shut down.”

Something unreadable flickered through Adrian’s amber eyes before disappearing.

“Maybe they just sold out of incubi,” he said softly.

That was the only explanation I had, too.

After leaving the dead storefront page, I started browsing other demon-market listings. Every shop sold different incubi, but the species information was mostly similar. I was debating how to steal somebody else’s instruction manual when Adrian suddenly dropped to his knees.

“If you’re angry, punish me instead.”

His head lowered obediently, completely submissive.

“Xavier is my younger brother. If he upset you, then I’m also responsible.”

Adrian had always been gentle, considerate, and impossibly well-behaved.

Besides, Xavier was the problem here. There was no reason to take it out on Adrian.

I reached out and rubbed one of his soft ears.

“Get up. I’m going to shower. Just warm the bed for me tonight.”

Adrian obediently prepared the bed before leaving the room.

For once, he didn’t linger beside me or cling affectionately for attention.

Instead, he went straight to Xavier.

Meanwhile, Xavier was still riding the high from getting slapped.

Then Adrian delivered the bad news.

“Master’s already looking online for new incubi.”

Xavier froze.

“…What? But she was worried about me earlier.”

“If you keep acting like this, she’ll throw you away sooner or later.”

Adrian’s expression turned icy.

“And once that happens, the best-case scenario is the recycling center.”

“I told you a long time ago that your demon instincts needed to be controlled.”

“Even if she doesn’t abandon me, if she abandons you, our twin bond means I won’t survive it either.”

“The Bureau of Supernatural Affairs officially allows demons to live among humans as long as they don’t commit crimes before contracting with an owner. But demons are naturally dangerous. The only way for them to live stable lives is under human supervision.”

“Once they reach adulthood, they’re required to form a Bond with a human and register it with the Bureau. Otherwise, they’re erased.”

“After a Bond is formed, demons are controlled and restrained by their Master. If a demon gets abandoned, they’re automatically classified as unstable and dangerous to society.”

“And dangerous defective products get recycled.”

Incubi at least had the option of bonding with a second owner after being abandoned.

Demons didn’t.

For incubi, bonding with humans was mostly about survival and feeding.

For demons, it was about control.

About being allowed to exist.

Adrian lowered his gaze.

“I still haven’t told Master what you really are.”

“If she finds out you’re a demon now, she might abandon you immediately.”

Demons never had the right to choose.

Once discarded, they were labeled hazardous forever.

And hazardous things got destroyed.

Originally, Adrian had planned to help Xavier improve his behavior first.

That way, when the truth finally came out, maybe their Master would accept him instead of sending him off to be recycled without a second thought.
