One alarm after another.

Like bells tolling from hell.

A loud crackle erupted, and the signal cut out completely.

Adrian had designed that whole-home security system himself back when they were together.

He had stayed up several nights working on it.

He had personally programmed every alert message into it.

It had never gone off before.

Uneasy, Adrian opened the app.

The uploaded footage showed flames and thick smoke billowing across the screen.

He shot up from his airplane seat.

“Adrian, what happened?”

Claire grabbed his arm.

“The plane’s about to take off. You should turn your phone off.”

Adrian’s eyes were red with panic.

“I have to go back.”

“The house is on fire. Lena’s still inside!”

Claire stood too and caught sight of the video on his phone.

“Adrian, you know what Lena’s like.”

“If there were even a spark in the house, she’d already be blowing up your phone, demanding you come back.”

“But there’s this much smoke and she hasn’t called you once.”

“Maybe she caused it on purpose.”

The others nodded.

“Exactly. All you can see on the footage is smoke. If the house were really burning, wouldn’t Lena run? The

cameras would’ve caught her.”

“Maybe she started the fire herself just to force you to come back.”

“She already jumped off a building. What wouldn’t she do?”

Thinking about the past, Adrian slowly calmed down.

That was true.

She even jumped off a building.

Starting a fire wasn’t exactly beyond her.

Still, he couldn’t shake the uneasiness in his gut.

“Besides, I texted Ryan three minutes ago. He said everything was fine.”

Claire held up her phone.

Ryan had been one of Adrian’s closest friends for over a decade.

Adrian trusted him.

So he sank back into his seat and wiped the sweat from his forehead.

Disgust and irritation crept across his face.

“After all these times, I can’t believe she still managed to fool me again.”

He shut off his phone in irritation.

By the time they reached their destination, there were no messages.

No missed calls.

Nothing.

If this were before, Lena would’ve been blowing up his phone nonstop by now.

Adrian had just pulled up her number when Claire walked over with a bottle of sunscreen, her cheeks slightly flushed.

“Adrian, it’s really sunny today. Can you put some sunscreen on me? I can’t reach my back.”

For the first time, Adrian turned her down.

“Ask one of your friends. I need to call Lena.”

Claire’s expression stiffened.

Then she finally lost control.

“Why are you still thinking about her after you promised to come on this trip with me?”

“You promised this trip was supposed to be about me.”

“You don’t even love Lena anymore. Why do you still care what happens to her?”

“I don’t love her?”

Adrian turned to her.

“When did I ever say I didn’t love her?”

“I’m just sick of her being suspicious all the time.”

“If she goes back to the way she used to be, I’ll still love her.”

“What about me?”

Tears filled Claire’s eyes.

“Do you really not feel anything for me?”

“If you don’t love me, why did you protect me?”

“Then why did you give me so many reasons to think you did?”

For the first time, seeing her cry didn’t make Adrian want to wipe away her tears.

All he felt was panic.

Why hadn’t Lena called?

Why hadn’t she texted?

“You said it yourself. They were the wrong signals.”

Adrian turned away and immediately called Lena.

Her phone was off.

He called Ryan next.

After Ryan declined the call three times, he finally picked up.

“What the hell are you doing? Where’s Lena?”

“Did she start that fire?”

“Did she burn herself?”

Adrian desperately wanted one of Ryan’s usual dismissive answers.

Maybe Ryan had only hung up because he was busy gaming.

Or maybe she’d thrown another fit and cried until she passed out.

Instead, Ryan stumbled over his words, insisting everything was fine.

“She…she’s asleep.”

SNAP!

The last bit of reassurance Adrian had been clinging to shattered.
