Don’t Be Scared, Hubby. This Is What You Wished For Chapter 02

Don’t Be Scared, Hubby. This Is What You Wished For Chapter 02

Adrian was on the phone with Claire, his voice gentle and patient.

“The second swimsuit looks better on you. You’ve got fair skin, so it’ll really stand out on you.”

The call was on speaker, and Claire laughed in agreement.

“I’m not bringing heels. The sand there is too soft, and I don’t want to hurt myself.”

“You’ll be fine. I’ll be right there to keep you safe.”

With my suitcase in hand, I pushed open the bedroom door.

Adrian sat at the dining table, completely unaware I was there.

Then he said wistfully,

“Talking to you, being with you… that’s the only time I can really relax.”

“These past seven years have been exhausting.”

I couldn’t help but scoff.

If he wanted to cheat, he could just admit it. Why bother making excuses?

At the sound, Adrian turned around, and the smile vanished from his face.

“What are you doing here?”

Then his gaze dropped to my suitcase, and he froze for a second.

“Where are you going?”

I ignored him and hurried toward the door with my suitcase.

Ethan’s flight was due to take off in two hours.

Adrian suddenly stood and crossed the room in a few strides, grabbing my wrist.

Then he noticed I was still in my hospital gown.

He cleared his throat, looking a little guilty.

“I’ve been too busy these past two days. I should’ve brought some clothes to the hospital for you. That was my fault.”

“I’ll take you back now. If there’s anything you want to eat, just tell me. I’ll make it for you.”

I yanked my wrist free, already out of patience.

“No need.”

He instinctively tugged at my suitcase.

The latch popped open, and my clothes spilled all over the floor.

Somehow, a travel brochure had gotten mixed in with them.

It was for the exact place he and Claire were planning to visit.

“You’re not going back to the hospital?”

Adrian’s voice shot up defensively.

“Lena Whitmore, there’s no way I’m taking you on my business trip.”

“Can you stop being so stubborn?”

“I’m going there to work, not to indulge another one of your crazy scenes.”

“Are you trying to make me the laughingstock of the entire company again, like last time?”

“And now you want to fight with me again?”

“Did you forget why you jumped in the first place?”

I understood.

He was using the divorce as a warning.

He wanted me to fall in line.

To shut up.

Otherwise, he’d go through with the divorce.

“I already signed the papers…”

A loud crash from the phone drowned me out.

Adrian immediately took the call off speaker and brought the phone to his ear.

He shot me a wary look, like he was afraid I’d lose it and make another scene.

“There’s an emergency at work. I’m not in the mood to argue with you.”

He tossed me that explanation before speaking into the phone.

“I’m on my way right now!”

What an act.

The whole thing made me sick.

I wasn’t about to waste another second picking up the clothes on the floor.

I grabbed my passport and phone and rushed out.

Adrian was in even more of a hurry than I was.

As he passed me, he suddenly grabbed my arm and dragged me toward the door.

“I’ll drop you back at the hospital on the way.”

I stumbled after him, the pain in my injured arm making my vision black out in waves.

“Adrian, are you insane?”

“If you need to go, then go. Don’t drag me with you!”

He wasn’t listening to a word I said.

He floored the gas.

All he could think about was the “coworker” on the other end of the line.

“Your safety comes first. Don’t touch anything.”

“Wait for me. I’ll take care of it when I get there. I’m almost there.”

What a lunatic.

Furious, I grabbed the tissue box and smashed it into his head hard enough to split the skin.

Blood streamed down his face, but he didn’t even glance at me.

“Adrian!”

“Enough!”

“I can’t even go deal with an emergency at work now?”

“We’re just talking. It’s not like we’re kissing or having sex, so you…”

He cut himself off again.

He took a deep breath and closed his eyes wearily.

“Forget it.”

“If you want to lose your mind, then go ahead.”

“In your eyes, everything I do is betrayal. Everything means I’m cheating.”

“Think whatever you want.”

“If me getting hurt is what it takes to make you calm down, then keep hitting me.”

“I’m used to it.”

I was already too dizzy to speak.

After all these years of marriage, there was no way Adrian didn’t know I suffered from severe vertigo.

He knew.

He just didn’t care.

I clutched the seat belt as tears blurred my vision.

Growing up, Ethan had never once made me suffer like this.

He always drove at a steady, careful speed.

No matter how urgent something was, it became secondary when it came to me.

And yet, because of one wish Adrian had made, I had been torn away from the childhood sweetheart I’d loved for twenty-three years.

Seven years apart.

Seven years without seeing him once.

And all that time, I’d had to endure Adrian’s contempt.

Suddenly, my phone rang inside my bag.

The moment I saw the familiar number on the screen, my eyes lit up.

Ethan!

The next second, Adrian’s hand shot over and cut the call dead.
