“Why are you turning here?”

“I need to get to the airport! His flight leaves in ten minutes. I’m not going to make it!”

I shouted at him.

The driver clenched his jaw and said nothing, nearly flooring the gas.

Then I realized where he was taking me.

Straight back to the house Adrian and I shared.

Cold sweat broke out all over me.

I lunged for the steering wheel.

“Pull over!”

The driver shoved me back hard and stared at me.

“Your husband alerted every taxi company in the city. He spent over a hundred grand just to find you.”

“He’s terrified you’re going to kill yourself, and you’re still throwing a fit?”

“He treats you that well and is this scared something might happen to you. What more could you possibly want?”

I rushed to explain.

“I’m not trying to kill myself!”

“Don’t listen to him. Just take me to the airport. I’ll pay you whatever you want.”

The taxi pulled into the neighborhood where Adrian and I lived.

The driver sighed.

“Stop making a fuss and just go home.”

Outside the house, Adrian, Claire, and several others stood by the entrance with their luggage, laughing and chatting.

“It’s a ten-hour flight. Is Claire going to be okay?”

Claire covered her mouth with a smile, her eyes crinkling.

“Adrian packed a bunch of things for me. A travel neck pillow, a latex seat cushion… I’ll be fine.”

Ryan, one of Adrian’s close friends, gave a teasing grin.

“Well, well. Adrian sure is thoughtful. He takes such good care of Mrs. Caldwell.”

“Knock it off.”

Adrian didn’t actually sound annoyed.

Clearly, this wasn’t the first time they had joked like that.

The taxi pulled to a stop in front of them.

I stared out the window through red-rimmed eyes.

I spotted a sports coupe nearby with its door still open.

Without a second thought, I bolted out of the taxi.

No matter what, I had to make it to the airport today.

But Claire suddenly screamed, covered her head, and crouched down in terror.

“Don’t strip me! I’m sorry! I’m sorry!”

“You psycho!”

Ryan thought I was going after Claire again.

He lunged at me, knocked me down, and pinned me to the ground.

With a cold sneer, he grabbed a fistful of my hair.

“Adrian, just go enjoy your trip with Claire. I’ll keep an eye on her for you.”

“I’ll bring every guy from my boxing gym over here and have them surround the whole place. Let’s see how she gets out then.”

“Adrian…”

I nearly blacked out from the pain.

The wound on my fractured arm split open again.

The metallic scent of blood spread through the air.

Adrian glanced at me and opened his mouth as if to say something, but Claire tugged at his sleeve.

“We’re going to miss our flight.”

“Be good. Whatever this is, we’ll deal with it when I get back.”

He turned away and led Claire to the car.

Ryan chained my wrists and ankles to a chair in the bedroom.

“Adrian and Claire have never crossed the line. I seriously don’t know what you’re always so suspicious about.”

“Besides, if you hadn’t gotten between them back then, Claire and Adrian would’ve been together years ago. You never would’ve had a chance.”

I lifted my pale face and gave a cold laugh.

“He was the one who wished for me to fall in love with him. If it weren’t for him…”

Ryan cut me off with a scoff.

“You really think making a wish on some willow branch can make it come true? What is this, a novel?”

“You’re just putting on an act. You turned Adrian down nine hundred and ninety-nine times, then said yes the thousandth time.”

“If you didn’t love him, why would you have said yes?”

“If you hadn’t, Adrian would’ve ended up with Claire.”

The chains rubbed my wrists raw until they started to bleed.

I stopped struggling.

My phone was lying on the floor, and I could see Ethan had replied.

[Wait for me. I’m coming to get you.]

“Adrian and Claire are already on the plane.”

Ryan waved his phone in front of me.

“Throw all the tantrums you want. It won’t change anything.”

“I’m not as soft as Adrian. Don’t expect me to rush you to the hospital.”

When I didn’t respond, he glanced at me and laughed.

“If you’d behaved this well from the start, Adrian might not have grown to hate you.”

I closed my eyes and waited for Ethan to track my location and find me.

I didn’t know how much time had passed before I heard footsteps outside.

I thought it was Ethan.

But when I opened my eyes, I saw Ryan sprinting out in panic.

A fire had suddenly broken out in the house.

Thick smoke was already pouring into the bedroom.

I choked on the smoke, barely able to breathe.

“Ryan…”

I thrashed against the chains.

I screamed his name until my voice cracked, praying he would come back and save me.

But no one came back.

The burning door panel crashed down.

The heat was so intense that my vision kept going dark.

I closed my eyes in despair.

“Ethan…”

With a deafening crash, the entire house COLLAPSED.

At the same moment, Adrian, sitting on the plane, suddenly received an emergency alert from the home security system.
