Sophie was almost laughing. “Damian had her thrown out.”

“He said publicly that Poppy shared the guilt and they’d atone together.”

Then he sold off the merged family assets at a loss.

He donated everything to that same charity.

Poppy went insane. She swore she’d destroy what Damian was holding onto.

She anonymously tipped off Page Six of the *New York Post* with a bunch of lies about my personal life abroad.

Luckily Damian caught it and publicly shut it down before it blew up.

The Astors were already furious with Damian, but the families’ history and the Blackwoods’ mediation had kept things civil.

But when it almost turned into a lawsuit, that was it.

The Astors demanded compensation for Poppy’s suffering.

The Blackwoods demanded the Astors hand over Poppy for defamation, saying she’d nearly ruined their son’s life.

Decades of friendship were over.

Sophie sighed. “Claire, I always kind of envied you.”

“When they all treated Poppy like a princess, you were the only one who called it out. The rest of us… we were all cowards.”
