On the other end of the line, my mom picked up on it right away.

After all, she’d turned down an amazing job offer for my sake.

“Mom, I know you have a million questions.”

But right now, I didn’t have the emotional strength to explain any of this.

“I’ve made up my mind. Once I wrap up work and my visa, I’ll come with you.”

“I’ll tell you everything then.”

She was quiet for a few seconds, but she didn’t push.

After I hung up, I collapsed onto the couch and tried to steady my breathing.

Damian’s buddies were right.

We had a prenup and a wedding, but he’d locked the marriage license in his safe on purpose. Until that was filed, I was just a replaceable “fake wife.”

Like now, I didn’t have to wait for him to come home or get dragged through a messy divorce and settlement.

I swallowed my feelings and forced myself to pack.

In the closet, our pressed vacation couple outfits seemed to laugh at me.

I’d designed them myself for the honeymoon with Damian.

I’d pulled all-nighters, made revision after revision, and only just got the final pieces today.

Half an hour ago, I was excited for Damian to try them on.

Now I ripped months of work off the hangers and shoved them all into the trash.

I packed fast. It was nearly midnight by the time I grabbed my suitcase and headed out the door.

The elevator opened, and I heard a familiar voice in the hallway.

“Damian, say it!”

“You are my royal stallion!”

“Come on! Giddyup!”

Through my blurred vision, I saw Damian. He hadn’t been home in three days. He was carrying Poppy on his back.

Her face was flushed. She tugged his ear with one hand and smacked his head with the other.

She was forcing him to neigh like a horse.

Damian tried to steady her flailing hands, and the Valentino heels hooked on his fingers dropped to the floor.

The sound triggered the motion sensor lights.

Damian saw me. His grip loosened, and Poppy slid off his back.
