Canceled Honeymoon Chapter 06

Canceled Honeymoon Chapter 06

The smile on my boss’s face froze.

I kept my tone polite. “Is there something specific you’re unhappy with?”

Poppy didn’t even glance at the contract. She inspected her fresh manicure.

“I can’t put my finger on it. It’s just a vibe…”

She hooked her arm through Damian’s. “What do you think?”

All eyes turned to him, and Damian’s gaze landed on me.

I instinctively looked away.

“It seems your project lead isn’t very confident in her own work.”

Damian tossed the proposal back onto the table. “I’m suddenly not feeling this investment. We’re pulling out. And just so you know, I’ve had my people start a hostile takeover of your firm. Congratulations, Claire. You’ll be working for me soon.”

Two years of work. Thousands of scrapped sketches.

Countless sleepless nights to get to this point and wrap up this chapter of my career.

All destroyed with a few careless words.

Back in the office, my boss was pale and shaking. He rushed in, nearly in tears. “Claire, he’s going to destroy the company! Please, just go apologize to him!”

It wasn’t that I didn’t want to finish things myself.

I just knew Poppy’s target was me.

The only way the project could survive was if I left.

And now my one remaining tie here had been severed.

Another wave of nausea hit me, and I stumbled out of the room.

Suddenly, a hand yanked me into an empty meeting room.

Damian hadn’t left.

He pushed me against the door and bit my lip in punishment.

His hand started to wander. I gathered every ounce of strength and bit down hard.

The taste of blood filled my mouth.

My hand moved faster than my brain. I slapped him and shoved him away.

“Get out.”

Damian froze. His expression was unreadable.

After a few seconds, he raised a hand and wiped the blood from his lip.

Behind me, he slammed the door shut just as I’d cracked it open.

One hand pinned my wrists above my head.

The other gripped my chin. His calloused thumb traced my lips.

“Claire, after all this time, why can’t you learn?”

I struggled, but the harder I fought, the tighter he held me.

His warm breath brushed my ear. “If you’d just apologized last time, we wouldn’t be here.”

“Is it really so hard to just bend a little?”

Damian’s voice was gentler than any sweet nothing he’d ever whispered.

But I couldn’t stop trembling. It wasn’t the cold. My stomach was cramping.

A strange, heavy pulling sensation started. Something was flooding out.

A terrifying thought crossed my mind.

I tried to look down, but Damian’s grip on my chin forced me to bite my lip and hold still.

Something warm trickled down my leg and dripped onto the carpet.

Even Damian sensed something was wrong.

He looked down. His face went pale. His pupils shrank.

“Claire, you…”
