Canceled Honeymoon Chapter 05

Canceled Honeymoon Chapter 05

In that moment, the world went silent.

Even Poppy was stunned for a second.

When it sank in, she couldn’t wait to swing her hand at my face.

Damian caught her wrist just before she made contact.

Those eyes that had pulled me from my nightmares and watched over me in the dark were now cold as ice. They held disgust and a warning.

“You think you can just walk away from me?”

“If I let her hit you, you’d never stop crying about it, right? If she’s hurt, you don’t feel a thing?”

“When you’ve come to your senses, apologize to Poppy yourself.”

Damian took Poppy into the elevator.

I stood in the hallway watching the floor numbers climb. I was shaking.

Cold. So cold.

The chill came from deep inside, and no designer coat could stop it.

Five years. Five whole years.

My mind could cut ties, but my heart couldn’t catch up that fast.

I don’t know how long I stood there before I hailed a cab.

I went to a hotel near the office.

I’d stay there until I left.

While I waited for my visa, I needed to finish the project I’d led for nearly two years.

My personal life was in ruins, but I couldn’t leave my work unfinished.

I threw myself into overtime and stayed frantically busy.

I wanted to speed up the timeline and keep my mind occupied.

When I was busy, I didn’t have time to think about anything else.

Maybe I’d pushed myself too hard. I’d been tired and nauseous lately.

My boss told me to get it together. The client was coming this afternoon to finalize the contract.

I walked into the conference room and froze.

A familiar figure sat at the head of the table.

Damian was in a suit. Beside him was Poppy in a low-cut backless dress.

My nails dug into my palms. My boss thought I was nervous and whispered, “Relax. The client’s project lead already saw the proposal and designs.”

“These two are just trust-fund babies playing business. You can BS those spoiled brats all day.”

“Just give your normal presentation.”

I took a deep breath and forced a smile.

I opened the file and walked through my design concept step by step.

Poppy propped her chin on her hand, nodding and smiling. Under the table, my boss gave me a thumbs-up.

I exhaled. Seeing the mood, the others slid the contract forward.

Poppy rolled her eyes and tossed the pen aside. “It’s not right. This design is way too boring. It’s giving me a headache. I’m not signing.”
