Canceled Honeymoon Chapter 04

Canceled Honeymoon Chapter 04

Damian instinctively moved to steady her, but she shoved him away.

“Don’t touch me! I really can’t take it! Every time she sees me, she wants to break up or run away. Am I some kind of prop to her? Or garbage she can’t stand?”

“Damian! Let’s just end this friendship! I’m tired of her dirty looks!”

“It’s all my fault. I never should’ve shown my face. I never should’ve grown up with you!”

She started to fake a violent gag and hyperventilate. She clawed frantically through her Hermès bag.

“My pills… where’s my Xanax… I’m going to die!”

“I’ll just go off myself! Better than being treated like this all the time!”

The warmth on my wrist vanished. Damian pulled her into his arms to stop her thrashing.

It only took a few seconds.

Poppy heaved in his arms, her eyes red-rimmed.

Damian cupped her face and turned his dark gaze on me.

“Happy now?”

It was always like this.

The moment I showed any resistance, Poppy would claim an anxiety attack and start hurting herself.

I couldn’t speak up. I couldn’t avoid her. I couldn’t even run.

Before, Damian would ask me to humor her.

“Claire, you went through a rough patch too. You know you just have to go along with it.”

For the sake of safety, I always compromised and backed down.

But then I realized Poppy’s “condition” only flared up when Damian chose me over her.

Her anxiety was just a possessive fit to force him to choose.

I looked down and saw the smugness on Poppy’s face.

I nodded. “Yeah, pretty happy. But you were too quick. She hadn’t even found her pills yet.”

“Your acting’s a little rusty. Maybe take some classes.”

Confusion flickered in Poppy’s eyes. She froze and was about to start again.

Damian stood up first, still holding her. He stepped toward me, looming.

His tall shadow swallowed me whole.

The shoulders that once shielded me now carried another woman and blocked my way.

“Claire, I’ve definitely spoiled you too much.”

He lifted Poppy’s hand toward me and said coldly, “She has every right to make you pay now. You should be thanking me for holding her back.”
