After watching Nolan’s taillights disappear around the 

corner, I let out a long breath and nearly collapsed 

from relief. 

I turned to walk into the community, but my blood ran 

cold. 

Adrian was standing a few yards away, holding an 

umbrella. 

I had no idea how long he had been there. 

The streetlight stretched his shadow out across the wet 

pavement. 

I scurried toward him, my voice hitting a pitch only 

dogs could hear. 

“Adrian, didn’t you say you had to work late at the office tonight? Why are you back?” 

“I canceled the meeting,” Adrian said calmly. 

“Oh…” 

I forced a laugh. “I’m not a kid. You didn’t have to wait for me at the gate.” 

Adrian did not move. 

His gaze passed over me and settled in the direction 

where the car had disappeared. 

“Who drove you home?” 

“A classmate.” 

My heart skipped. 

“A male classmate?” 

“…Yeah.” 

Adrian was silent for two seconds. 

The air around him seemed to sink colder. 

“So you threw me away for him?” 

I stood there, stunned. 

The words seemed to mean exactly that, and somehow 

also not exactly that. 

“No, it wasn’t like that! I just… we were close to the 

restaurant. I’ll make it up to you, I swear!.” 

I explained in a rush, for some reason feeling like I had just been caught cheating. 

Adrian lowered his eyes to me. Under the streetlight, the tiny mole beneath his eye looked especially clear. 

“Okay. Let’s go home.” 

He turned and walked back with the umbrella. 

I hurried after him. Along the way, the only sound 

between us was the rain tapping against the umbrella. 

After hesitating for a long time, I asked quietly, “Are 

you mad?” 

Adrian paused for half a step. 

“No.” 

For some reason, my chest felt tight.
