Steam curled thickly above the table, and the spicy 

broth bubbled menacingly. 

Nolan slid a plate of beef into the pot, then added a few 

shrimp balls to my bowl while muttering, “I remember 

you loved these when you were little.” 

I bit distractedly at my straw, my stomach twisting 

with nerves. 

On my phone screen sat an unread message from 

Adrian. 

Adrian:[Why aren’t you home?] 

I quickly typed back. 

Stella: [Eating with a classmate. I won’t be home for 

dinner.] 

Then, guilty as a thief, I flipped my phone facedown on 

the table. 

Nolan was busy mixing his sauce and did not notice my 

tiny suspicious move. 

After hesitating for a long time, I tested the waters. 

“Nolan, is there another guy at your school with the 

same name as you?” 

The second the words left my mouth, Nolan slapped his 

hand down on the table. 

The sharp crack scared me so badly I nearly stopped breathing. 

“You know that guy?” Nolan narrowed his eyes at me. 

“No, no, no.” 

I shook my head frantically. 

Nolan went off like a firecracker, unloading years of repressed salt. 

“Having the same name was bad enough, but we’re in the same department and the same year.” 

“And he’s a total curve–wrecker. I get a 98, he gets a 99. I was winning the 5k last spring, and he literally sprinted past me in the last ten yards just to be a jerk.” 

Nolan gritted his teeth. 

“When we ran for student council president, he had to compete against me too. And all those girls actually thought he was hotter than me, so they voted for him.” 

“People compare us every day.” 

“No matter what I do, he has to beat me by one step. There’s no justice in this world.” 

I nodded solemnly. “Exactly. He’s way too much.” 

Nolan looked at me with the approving expression of someone who had finally found a teachable child. 

“Don’t let the face fool you, Stella. Behind those eyes, 

he’s a shark.” 

“His dad’s business is way bigger than ours. He started handling company matters freshman year, and I heard 

he already forced out several shareholders.” 

“That impressive…” 

Cold sweat ran down my back. 

“But it’s not like I’ve never beaten him.” 

Nolan’s expression visibly softened, and smugness crept into his eyes. 

He curled his mouth into a wicked little smile. 

“What?” I asked obediently. 

“I got his sister.” 

“From now on, he has to call me his brother–in–law with proper respect.” 

I froze. “His sister?” 

“Yeah. I only found out later that Celeste was his 

sister.” 

Nolan shrugged. 

“But that guy is so petty and vindictive. He actually suspected I did it on purpose and even told me not to 

let him meet my sister.” 

Nolan looked pleased with himself. “Too bad for him, I only have you, and you’re safely tucked away in 

another country. He can’t touch me.” 

“That threat doesn’t work on me.” 

My fork slipped from my hand. 

“What’s wrong? Are you sick? Why did you go so pale?” 

Nolan frowned at me. 

“I’m fine. It’s just hot.” 

I lowered my head to pick up the fork. 

I wanted to die. 

Had Adrian taken me in only to get revenge on Nolan? 

Was all his kindness this whole time some legendary long–game trap? 

I’d insulted his billionaire father, drained his bank 

account, and worst of all. 

I’d definitely left Dorito crumbs on his $10,000 Italian 

leather sofa. 

After dinner, Nolan insisted on driving me back to my 

“rented place.” 

“No, really, it’s fine. I can get a rideshare back by 

myself.” 

“Stella.” 

He crossed his arms and looked down at me, his 

expression stubborn enough to make it clear he would 

not take no for an answer. 

“You’re not hiding a man in your apartment, are you?” 

Cold sweat nearly slid down my forehead. “How is that 

possible? Don’t say weird things.” 

“Then let me drive you.” 

I could not win against him, so I got into his car with a 

stiff scalp and a guilty heart. 

When the car reached the entrance of the gated 

community, I hurriedly said. 

“You can stop here. Your plate isn’t registered, so 

security won’t let you in. It’s too late tonight. I’ll talk to 

the management office next time.” 

Nolan did not seem suspicious anymore. 

Instead, he teased, “Looks like Mom really made a fortune overseas, huh? She gave you that much spending money? You’re only back for a few months 

and you’re already renting a whole estate house.” 

“Something like that.” 

I forced an awkward smile.
