I froze. 

“You’re my brother?” 

He looked like he was five seconds away from a mental 

breakdown. 

“Who else would I be?” 

“Look at the nose, Stella. We’re clones.” 

“Wait, wait, wait.” 

I lifted both hands in front of me. 

Then my phone chimed. 

A store loyalty account notification popped up. 

[Store Alert: Your credit card ending in 8867 was charged $1,800 yesterday at 4:23 PM at Briarwood Galleria. Your VIP loyalty points have been updated.] 

To make shopping easier for me, Adrian had linked his 

credit card to my Apple Pay. 

I checked the notification. It was a receipt from the 

mall. 

My eyes landed on the profile information. 

Adrian Whitmore. VIP. July 21, 2003. 

The birthday was wrong. 

That was not my brother’s birthday. 

My finger froze on the screen. 

Same department. 

Same first name in the campus directory. 

There were two Adrians in the physics department. 

I really had mistaken the wrong person. 

And that person was my brother’s sworn enemy. 

Nolan flashed a row of white teeth and waved a hand in 

front of my face. 

“Stella, you okay? You look like you just saw your life flash before your eyes.” 

“Were you completely overwhelmed by how handsome 

I am?” 

He sighed dramatically. “I get it. Radiating charm is my burden.” 

I snapped back to myself, on the verge of tears. 

“Nolan…” 

“Hey, hey, hey. I’m not so handsome that you need to 

cry on the spot.” 

“What is that face?” 

Nolan panicked a little as he tried to comfort me, then 

quickly changed the subject. 

“Wait. Why are you here?” 

“Mom actually agreed to let you come back?” 

I squeaked out the truth. 

“She didn’t…” 

“I went rogue. I’m an exchange student.” 

“You…” 

Nolan almost choked on his own breath. 

“I heard Mom mention before that you were in the 

physics department at Ashford, so I came looking for 

you.” 

“Stella Lu].” 

When he used that tone, I knew I was in for a lecture. 

“I know, I know.” 

I quickly raised both hands in surrender. 

“[It’s all legal! I’m here for school!.” 

“What about Mom-” 

I rushed to explain before he could finish, speaking so fast the words nearly tripped over each other. 

“I’ll tell her the truth as soon as possible.” 

“I just missed you too much.” 

“Don’t be mad.” 

Nolan took a deep breath, then flicked my forehead. It 

was not too hard, but not exactly gentle either. 

“You’re way too bold. What if I’d still been on my hiking trip? You’d be wandering the streets of the city like a lost puppy.” 

He paused, then looked me over from head to toe. 

The worry in his eyes was impossible to hide. 

“Where are you staying now? Are you adjusting okay? Do you have enough money?” 

“Everything’s fine.” 

“I… rented a place.” 

Feeling guilty, I kept my answer vague. 

The bell rang. 

The hallway instantly became lively. The lab door 

opened from the inside, and students came out in twos 

and threes. 

Out of the corner of my eye, I caught a glimpse of 

Adrian. 

My heart shot straight into my throat. 

I grabbed Nolan’s arm and dragged him hard toward 

the stairwell. 

“I’m hungry. Let’s go eat. We can talk while we eat.” 

“Hey, why are you in such a hurry…” 

I dragged and pulled my brother downstairs, not 

daring to look back even once.
