Chloe grabbed my arm and pulled me around the corner. “No wonder Waldron wasn’t in the office today.

Turns out the big boss came down. Let’s get out of the way. I heard he just called off his engagement. He’s been in a brutal mood-already axed three VPs.”

I stopped. My fingers curled. “Called off? Why?”

Chloe shrugged. “No idea. Word is Sophie wasn’t thrilled, so he wrote her a check for ten million. She was

gone before he could change his mind.”

Ten million? My eyes went wide.

Breaking up with Evan earned you that much? Why didn’t that stupid SYSTEM warn me? Evan was that

generous? I’d been ripped off!

I was this close to dragging the SYSTEM out for a beating, when a familiar woody scent hit my nose-cool, steady, with a faint whisper of cedar at the end.

My whole body locked up. I hadn’t smelled that in so long. Every time Evan lowered his head to kiss me, that scent would rush toward me, wrapping around my entire body.

I turned stiffly. He was standing right behind me. Eyes dark, looking down-like a wall, blocking most of the

light.

On the polished floor, our shadows overlapped. The sight brought back memories I couldn’t shake. If he reached out now, palm against my waist, pulling me in, I’d fit into him just like I used to-his chin on my head, arms circling me, breath in my neck, with that soft whisper: “Let me recharge.”

Just the thought made my hands shake behind my back.

He took ten minutes to finally speak. “Excuse me, miss. You’re in the way.”

Distant. Polite. I blinked.

Chloe reacted fast, pulling me back. “Sorry, boss-she’s new. We’ll get out of your way.”

I stumbled back two steps. Evan stepped sideways, passing through where I’d been, his coat stirring a cold

breeze.

Chloe pressed a hand to her chest. “That presence-scared the life out of me.”

Then she stopped, frowning. “Wait, we weren’t blocking anything. Why did he hug the wall?”

My head was spinning. I answered randomly: “Maybe he likes walls.”

Chloe blinked. “…Oh. Okay.”
