Why Can’t I Escape This Man Chapter 07

Why Can’t I Escape This Man Chapter 07

I’d been sending out resumes for the past month. I was finally hired by a tech company, and the salary was far higher than I’d expected-enough for Mash and me to live well.

First day, I woke up early, filled Mash’s bowl, and headed out ready to go.

Although it was only a small branch under a larger group, the company was still quite sizable. My supervisor

was a pudgy middle-aged guy in glasses, shirt untucked on one side, sweat stains darkening the fabric.

Because of the heat, his entire face looked as if it had been steamed, with layers of oiliness shining through.

He squinted at me, scanning every inch. I felt a chill crawl down my spine, barely keeping my expression

together.

He didn’t notice-or didn’t care. He smiled and extended a hand. “New hire, right? Pretty thing. Looks like our

department just got another beauty.”

I barely touched his fingertips, pulled my hand back fast, and forced a dry laugh.

Mr. Waldron’s smile stayed glued on. He droned on, his sticky gaze crawling over me the whole time like a fly

I couldn’t shoo away.

I nodded like a bobblehead, already inching backward.

When he finally finished, he waved over a girl named Chloe to show me around.

Chloe looped her arm through mine and walked me through the place.

“Breakroom there, conference room there. The big boss’s office is upstairs-he doesn’t come here much. Everyone’s pretty easy to work with. But there’s one person you need to watch out for…”

She leaned in closer, voice dropping.

“Mr. Waldron. That disgusting old creep uses his connection as a relative of the manager to harass young women here. Scared off a bunch of interns already. Just don’t ever be alone with him.”

Before she could finish, the elevator chimed. The doors slid open, and a group stepped out. Chloe stopped

mid-sentence.

I nearly bumped into her. I was about to ask what was wrong when a tall figure caught the corner of my eye.

I looked up. And froze.

The man I hadn’t seen in months was right there.

For a second I didn’t even believe it. Then the familiar silhouette crossed through the glass door. Evan didn’t glance sideways-he just walked, one hand holding documents, flipping pages as he moved, the overhead

light carving a cold edge along his profile.

I stared. He turned two pages, paused, looked up.

From a few steps away, his eyes landed on me.

My breath caught. We locked eyes for a strange, suspended moment. Then he looked back down and kept reading. There wasn’t the slightest ripple of emotion on his face.I let my shoulders drop. Right. He didn’t

remember me anymore.
