Why Can’t I Escape This Man Chapter 01

Why Can’t I Escape This Man Chapter 01

After successfully redeeming the obsessive male lead, I obediently stepped aside for the female lead, just as promised.

I took a new identity and left. But I didn’t even last a full day before he found me.

The SYSTEM waved it off. “No worries. If he recognizes you, I’ll just give you a new one.”

So for the next year, I was forced to play the roles of a chef, maid, monkey, hairdresser, baker, and street food vendor.

Every single time, Evan Chase recognized me within a second, dragged me back to his villa, and thoroughly had his way with me.

The last time, he kissed my fingers and said in a hoarse voice, “Enough with the cosplay. Tomorrow, we’re going to get our marriage license.”

I froze, staring at the ring on my finger. Before I could answer, the SYSTEM snapped:

“Forget it! I refuse to believe this! This time, I’ll erase his memories. There’s no way he’ll recognize you. I’ll also implant memories that Sophie Newman is his fiancée and that he’s been in love with her for years.”

Sure enough, when we met again, the man who had proposed to me days earlier walked right past without a glance.

“Excuse me, miss. You’re in the way.”

After over two hundred failed attempts, the SYSTEM finally stopped giving me new identities.

It shifted its focus to Evan Chase instead.

“Host, I promise you—this time he won’t recognize you so easily.”

I yawned. Heard that one before.

Over the years, the SYSTEM had forced me into all kinds of gigs—selling treadmills to octogenarians, feeding college students questionable street food, even performing as a monkey jumping through flaming hoops at a circus.

Every time, the SYSTEM swore it would work.

And every time, Evan Chase showed up with his security team, took one look at me, and saw straight through the disguise.

Then he’d rip it all off and drag me back to his villa.

My back still ached from the last time.

The last time it took him two days to find me. The time before that, three. He was getting faster.

I wondered if this time he’d beat his own record.

A strange flicker of anticipation stirred in my chest.

The SYSTEM, seeing my silence, tried again: “This time is really different. Host, I brought you to this gala so you could see for yourself…”

Before it could finish, the ballroom fell silent.

Glasses stopped clinking. Heads turned toward the entrance. Whispers rippled through the crowd.

Someone important had arrived.

The crowd pushed me back. My heel caught on my gown. I stumbled, barely catching myself.

Then I looked up.

And saw that familiar face.

Evan Chase wore a charcoal-gray shirt tonight. Broad shoulders filled the fabric perfectly, tapering to a narrow waist. Tall, sharp-featured, every inch the aloof heir.

Too handsome. I swallowed hard.

Then my gaze shifted to the woman beside him.

A woman I’d never seen before.

She was radiant, draped in Evan’s jacket, her fingers grazing his arm.

Evan hated being touched.

But now he stood there, expressionless, showing no resistance at all.

Maybe the AC was turned up too high. A chill seeped into my bones, and I couldn’t recover for a long time.
