That night, I woke up to the sound of crying.

My mom saw I was awake and grabbed my hand.

“Ava, you have to go beg Liam. He had your father taken away.”

“Your dad is old. His health isn’t good. He can’t take this.”

I got up fast.

I found Liam in Natalie’s hospital room.

He didn’t even look at me. “What do you want?”

I bit my lip. “Did you have my dad taken away?”

His tone was flat. “Your father committed assault. Locking him up for a few days will teach him a lesson.”

I couldn’t hold back. “Liam, that’s my dad. He’s known you since you were a kid.”

For Natalie, he put my own father in jail.

Liam finally looked at me. “Natalie has always been fragile. She almost lost the baby because of him.”

That’s when I saw it. This wasn’t the same man.

“What do you want?”

I’ve never been a good daughter. But I couldn’t let my dad rot in there.

Liam raised an eyebrow. “Your father hurt Natalie. He should apologize.”

I didn’t hesitate. “I’m sorry. Please forgive my dad.”

I bowed ninety degrees to Natalie.

Liam looked surprised by how fast I moved.

Natalie leaned against his chest. “Liam, I know I should forgive Ava.”

“But this baby was so precious for us. We got lucky this time, but what if we hadn’t?”

“I just can’t accept such an empty apology.”

Liam looked at me. “You heard her. She’s not satisfied.”

I clenched my fists until my knuckles went white.

I turned and walked outside the ward.

“I’m sorry.” I knelt right there in the hallway. “It’s all my fault.”

Liam wanted to say something, but Natalie pulled his arm.

The door closed in my face.

I’d just had a miscarriage. I was weak.

Kneeling on that cold floor, my whole body shook.

But I couldn’t leave. Not with my dad in there.

Liam sat in the room, distracted.

Even when Natalie acted cute, he didn’t react.

He sat on the couch and remembered the past.

When he’d gone bankrupt and had nothing.

When he wanted to die, Ava Hart had appeared in his life like a ray of light.

The sky slowly started to lighten.

Liam got up and walked out of the room.

But no one was there.

Panicked, he called the nurse. “Where’s the person who was kneeling at the door?”

The nurse thought for a moment. “She collapsed last night from exhaustion.”

“Where is she now?”

“She’s already been discharged.”

Then Liam’s phone rang. “Mr. Vance, Mr. Hart has been released on bail. He’s left the detention center.”

Liam’s whole body went stiff.

Ava hadn’t been back in three years. And he was the only one she had in her circle.
