While She Buried Her Grandfather, He Was Walking Down The Aisle Chapter 01

The year the Vance family went bankrupt, everyone said I was crazy.

I left my parents and my comfortable life behind and followed Liam Vance to Los Angeles.

Over three years, he worked his way up and became a big shot in L.A.

I thought I’d made it through.

Then my grandfather—the man who raised me—passed away.

I took Vance’s hand, squeezed it gently, and my voice came out almost like begging.

“Grandpa was always so good to me. Can we go home together and visit his grave?”

He didn’t even look up from his papers.

“Things are really busy at work right now. You go home first.”

There was even a hint of impatience in his voice.

Never mind. I packed my stuff and went back to Kansas alone.

The trip from L.A. took three hours. On the way, I saw a post from a mutual friend on Ins.

Liam stood next to a woman, holding her bag with this soft look on his face.

The caption read: “First love really is different. Even the famous Mr. Vance still has to carry the bags.”

I zoomed in on that photo and stared at it for a long time.

That woman was his first love. The one who dumped him when his family went broke.

*********

I stared at the photo until my eyes burned, but I couldn’t get a single word out.

“Hey, look who has the nerve to come back.”

My cousin Jessica’s voice cut through from the side, a sneer on her lips.

She glanced at me and added, slow and calm, “Some people really have no heart. Grandpa was so good to her since she was little, and she couldn’t even come see him one last time.”

I clenched my fists and said nothing.

Yeah. I gave up everything for Liam.

Even Grandpa, who loved me most, didn’t get to see me one last time.

My mom walked over and took my hand, her eyes red.

“You’re back. That’s good. That’s good.”

She looked behind me cautiously. “Where’s Liam? I heard he’s doing really well. Why didn’t he come back with you?”

Seeing my mother’s face—she looked ten years older—I forced back my sadness and smiled at her.

“He’s got a new project at work. He couldn’t get away.”

Jessica snorted. “Busy, my ass. He just doesn’t care about you.”

She slowly pulled out her phone.

“He’s marrying his first love today. You do know that, right?”

Jessica held up her phone.

The screen showed a live broadcast of a lavish wedding.

Liam, dressed in the groom’s suit I’d imagined a thousand times, walked step by step toward Natalie Rose.

I thought about the past.

I’d brought up marriage so many times.

He always made excuses.

It wasn’t until two years ago, when the company finally got back on track, that everything settled.

That night, I took his hand and nervously asked him to marry me.

Liam’s face changed instantly.

He yanked his hand away.

“I have no plans to get married anytime soon.”

“You’re a girl. Why are you so desperate to get married?”

He turned and walked away, trampling all over the roses I’d carefully arranged.

I never brought it up again after that.

I thought he saw everything I did for him.

I believed I’d get my day.

In the live stream, Liam walked toward Natalie, stopped in front of her, and looked as nervous as a teenage boy.

“Natalie, we’ve been through so much. But I’ve realized you’re still the one I love the most.”

“I’ve been planning this wedding for two years. Every flower here is your favorite.”

“I know today is Black Friday, and it’s bad luck. But you’ve been upset about things at home, and I didn’t know how to comfort you. So I moved the wedding date ahead. Will you marry me?”

I couldn’t breathe. I stared at the screen.

Natalie smiled brightly. “I do.”

Liam scooped her up excitedly. “I finally married the love of my life.”

All the strength drained out of me. My vision went dark. I passed out.
