I woke up in the hospital.

My dad, Robert Hart, sat on the couch, his face pale.

My mom, Margaret, held my hand, her eyes red.

As soon as she saw I was awake, she pulled me into her arms.

“Ava, what’s going on between you and Liam?”

I didn’t say anything.

Dad jumped up. “A daughter of the Hart family does not get pregnant before marriage. And he’s already married. We can’t keep this child.”

I looked up sharply. “I’m pregnant?”

I put my hand over my lower abdomen.

Liam had gotten me pregnant once before.

When he first got to L.A., he was reckless and stepped on the wrong people’s toes. He got kidnapped.

Back then, we had no money and no strings to pull.

I was the only one running around trying to save him.

I never knew I was pregnant at the time.

On the day he got rescued, I lost the baby.

That was when I found out I might never get pregnant again.

Liam held my hand tight. “Ava, I’m sorry. From now on, I’ll only have kids with you. No one else.”

I thought I’d never be a mother.

But God was still on my side.

My mom squeezed my hand. “Ava, whatever you decide, Mom and Dad are behind you.”

Those warm words made my throat tighten.

I pulled out my phone and called Liam.

It rang and rang. No answer.

I called again.

The line connected, and I heard a woman’s voice mixed with gasps.

“Liam, you’re so amazing. My legs are shaking.”

Then Liam’s impatient voice. “What do you want?”

I bit my lip so hard I tasted blood. The pain kept me awake.

My voice came out hoarse. “I’m pregnant.”

“What?” Liam raised his voice.

“I’m pregnant. For six weeks.”

I’d loved him for so many years.

I’d chased after him since I was a kid.

When he went to college, I heard he had a girlfriend. Natalie Rose.

I was lost. Depressed.

Just as I was about to give up, the Vance family went bankrupt.

Natalie couldn’t handle it. She dumped him on the spot.

I didn’t even finish college. I dropped out and followed him to L.A.

If he’d come back to me, I was willing to give him another chance.

Everyone made mistakes.

There was a long silence on the other end.

Finally, Liam said, “I see.”

Then he hung up before I could answer.
