The party finally wound down, and classmates gathered in small groups.

Some pulled out their phones to look up car prices. Others called their families to share the news.

The room buzzed with the same festive energy as a Thanksgiving celebration.

Surrounded by well-wishers, Olivia headed to the front desk to settle the bill, beaming the whole

time.

“Hold on, everyone-we’ve got more plans after this. We’re going to watch an outdoor movie.”

Ethan naturally took her purse and slung it over his arm.

I’d finished eating too, so I pushed my chair back and stood up.

Just then, Ethan stopped and turned around.

His gaze cut across the crowd, locking dead onto me huddled in the corner.

“Scarlett, you done eating yet?”

A smirk tugged at his mouth, his voice quiet but loud enough for everyone to hear.

The whole group froze and turned to look.

My brow twitched. I had a feeling Ethan was about to say something nasty.

Sure enough, his expression darkened.

“How do you even have the gall to sit there eating like nothing’s wrong? Weren’t you always flaunting your money just to put Olivia down?”

“And now she’s gracious enough to put all that behind her and still invite you to her party-that alone shows what kind of person Olivia is.”

“Meanwhile you’re just shoveling food nonstop? Have you got no sense of decency at all?”

His words turned the room against me in an instant.

It was ridiculous. His accusation came out of nowhere and made no sense.

When had I ever used money to humiliate Olivia?

Ethan didn’t give me a chance to respond, a sneer spreading across his face.

“You’ve always acted like you’re above everyone else. Now that Olivia’s made something of herself through her own hard work…”

“You must be seething with jealousy right now.”

I was completely fed up and didn’t hold back.

“Ethan, you keep claiming I put Olivia down. Where’s your actual proof?”

“My family paid for every single one of Olivia’s school expenses for years. What gives you the right

to slander me like this?”

“I even helped her plenty of times because I felt sorry for her. Am I really in the wrong for lending her a hand? Is her ego really that thin-skinned?”

I scoffed outright.

“I once thought she was decent, but she’s just a backstabber who bites the hand that feeds her. And you? You’ve fallen hook, line and sinker for her whole charade.”

“…Pardon me?”

Ethan lunged forward, ready to throw a punch, but Olivia grabbed his arm.

“Ethan, don’t!”

Her voice cracked with a sob as she hung her head, putting on a wounded act.

“Don’t talk about Scarlett like that. She never treated me badly.”

Her so-called defense only made the other students more furious.

“Olivia, we’re all here for you-don’t be scared!”

“Exactly, we’re gonna stick up for you and set this straight! It’s just some stupid car, what does it even matter if we don’t get it?”

“Scarlett, you’re so arrogant! You think money makes you untouchable? Apologize to Olivia right now!”

I pointed at myself, stunned.

Hold on a second, you’re saying I owe her an apology?”

Olivia struggled to hold the crowd back, speaking in a pleading tone.

“Alright everyone, calm down please! I know you’re only looking out for me, but it’s getting really late now.”

“Once I pay the bill, we’re supposed to go watch the movie. There’s no point fighting here.”

It took effort to settle them down, but they still shot hostile glares my way.

Olivia gave me a subtle, triumphant look before pulling out her card to pay.

I sat back calmly, waiting for the show to start.

The card terminal let out a high-pitched error beep.

The front desk clerk looked up with an awkward expression.

“Ms. Carter, I’m sorry, but this card cannot be processed. The transaction keeps declining.”
