Even as they escorted Sloane away, she was still crying.

She looked at Gavin through her tears.

“Gavin, you have to believe me. I did it for the company.”

“I only kept backup copies because I was afraid someone would steal what we built.”

“You know me. Nobody wants this company to succeed more than I do.”

Gavin said nothing. He stood onstage, his face ashen.

For the first time, he didn’t rush to her defense.

Because this was no longer about jealousy, or blurred boundaries, or harmless jokes.

This was corporate espionage. Criminal exposure.

The kind of blow that could turn years of work to ash overnight.

Watching his face, I suddenly felt tired of the whole thing.

People are funny that way.

When someone else gets hurt, they tell you to toughen up.

The moment it happens to them, they suddenly understand exactly how much it hurts.

The launch event ended in chaos.

Gavin tried to stop us on our way out. My father’s security stepped in.

All he could do was call out across the crowd.

“Maren. We need to talk.”

She stopped walking.

For the first time, genuine panic showed in his eyes!

“I had no idea Sloane would do something like this.

“I admit I enabled her. That was my mistake.”

“But we’ve been together for years. You can’t erase everything because of her.”

Maren looked at him. Her eyes were red, but she didn’t cry.

“I’m not ending this because of her, Gavin. I’m ending it because of you.”

He went still, staring at her in disbelief.

She went on, “The first time she crossed a line, you called it a joke.”

“When she posted those messages online, you said it was just a habit.”

“When she set me up in front of every camera at your launch, you stood there and said nothing.”

“Now she leaked confidential information, and suddenly you understand boundaries.”

She drew a slow breath.

“But you didn’t figure that out for me. You figured it out for your company.”

The color drained from his face, little by little.

Maren slipped off her engagement ring and placed it in his hand.

“This engagement is over.”

A few reporters were still hanging around. Camera flashes erupted around us.

On instinct, Gavin reached for her hand. I stepped between them.

“Mr. Thorne. Show some respect.”

“The investigators haven’t even left the building yet

He looked at me. His voice was rough.

“Are you happy now, Drew?”

I smiled. “Not even close.”

“Sloane hasn’t been sentenced. Your company is still under investigation. And you still haven’t

apologized.”

“We’re a long way from done.”
