I felt a wave of pride.

That afternoon, Gavin came to the house himself.

I sat on the couch, flipping through a business magazine.

“Really? Then transfer her to the warehouse. Let her count boxes.”

He paused. “She’s the head of my executive office.”

“Oh.” I turned another page.

“I thought you said she just talked too much.”

“Seems risky to put someone like that in charge of your executive team.”

“What if one day she jokes that your financial statements are fake? Are investors supposed to appreciate her sense of humor too?”

A long silence stretched between us.

“Drew, I know you’re trying to have Maren’s back.”

“But marriage isn’t about watching your partner’s every move.”

“It’s not a courtroom. A healthy relationship requires trust.”

I finally looked up.

“Trust is for people. Not for spin.”

The smile on his face faded.

Maren sat beside me without saying a word.

Gavin turned to her. “Maren, do you feel the same way?”

He was smart. He knew he wouldn’t get anywhere with me, so he went after the softer target.

Maren twisted her fingers together. Her face turned pale.

She’d always hated disappointing people.

I used to think that was kindness. Now I saw it for what it was—a weakness.

I was about to step in when she suddenly lifted her head.

“I think Drew’s right.”

Gavin froze.

“What Sloane said yesterday made me uncomfortable.”

“And if she keeps it up, I honestly don’t think I can accept it.”

I almost burst out cheering. My sister had finally found her backbone.

A flicker of darkness crossed Gavin’s face—only for a second.

Then the gentle fiancé mask snapped back into place.

“Alright,” he said softly. “I’ll take care of it.”

After he left, Maren collapsed onto the couch.

“Drew, my legs were shaking the entire time.”

I shrugged. “That’s fine. At least you hit the nerve.”
