The Lawyer’s Lie Chapter 04

The Lawyer’s Lie Chapter 04

The next day, Clara went straight to Julian’s law firm.

When Clara pushed the door open, Wendy was sitting on Julian’s lap, locked in a kiss with him.

Julian’s eyes snapped to Clara’s, and he quickly set Wendy upright.

“She was triggered and started hyperventilating. I was only giving first aid.” For once, there was a trace of panic in his voice.

Clara seemed not to care at all. She simply placed a document on his desk.

A strange irritation suddenly rose in Julian’s chest. In the past, if he and Wendy had gotten even a little too close, Clara would have caused a scene.

Now she had no reaction at all.

Clara said, “Sign it. It terminates your authority as Noah’s counsel.”

He lowered his eyes to the document and pinched the bridge of his nose.

“You want to reopen the case? Without key evidence, the petition won’t get through.”

Clara looked at him and suddenly forced a faint smile.

“I had evidence. You lost it.”

Wendy immediately burst into tears.

“Clara, why are you doing this? Stop fabricating evidence. Don’t make things harder for Julian…”

“And is Noah not supposed to pay for hurting me?”

She cried harder and harder, clutching her chest as if she could barely breathe.

Julian gently patted her back. Then he met Clara’s fixed stare, paused, and quickly signed the document.

“I signed it. You can leave now. She’s having a trauma response.”

He did not even notice that one of the papers was a divorce agreement.

So the most cautious and meticulous top lawyer in D.C. lost all reason the moment Wendy was involved.

How ironic, Clara thought as she forced a faint smile and left the firm. The late-season cold snap should have been over, yet snow had begun to fall outside.

She lifted her head toward the sky. Was even the sky grieving over the injustice done to her?

Snowflakes landed on her face and slid down together with her warm tears.

She wiped them away in one harsh motion.

Then she went to the courthouse with the lawyer Asher Blackwood had arranged for her and submitted the backup surveillance footage, along with medical proof that Noah had no male genitalia.

The clerk took each document and said, “A petition for a retrial, plus a request to visit a death-row inmate. Wait for notice.”

After that, Clara filed the divorce agreement.

Only then did she return to the apartment and start packing. In the end, she did not take a single thing.

She even took off her wedding ring and left it on the coffee table before opening the door.

Someone was standing right outside.

Julian’s eyes were bloodshot, and he had lost all reason. He dragged Clara to the hospital.

“Clara Bennett! Do you have to torture her? How can you be this vicious? Why did you send those photos?”

Clara froze. “What photos?”

Julian frowned. “Wendy received photos of herself being assaulted back then. Besides you, who would do something like that?”

Clara said, “I didn’t,” but a scream suddenly came from inside the hospital room. Julian immediately released her and rushed in.

Wendy was curled up on the hospital bed. The moment she saw Clara, she backed away as if she had gone insane.

“No! Don’t come near me!”

The next second, she grabbed the paring knife from the table and pressed it to her own throat.

“Please stop torturing me. I was wrong!”

Julian did not dare move. Even his voice was no longer steady. “Wendy, put the knife down first.”

Wendy stared fixedly at Clara’s face.

“That face looks exactly like the rapist’s face! I can’t take it! If I have to keep seeing that face, I won’t be able to live!”

Wendy moved her hand again, and blood seeped from her neck. Julian closed his eyes.

The next second, he said to the assistant at the door, “Hold her down.”
