The Lawyer’s Lie Chapter 05

The Lawyer’s Lie Chapter 05

Two assistants rushed in, but they pinned Clara against the wall.

Julian picked up another paring knife and walked toward her.

Clara realized what was happening and stared at him in disbelief. “Are you insane? Just check, and you’ll

know it wasn’t me-”

Before she could finish, the tip of the knife touched her face. Julian’s hand was steady. He made only a light

cut.

A shallow wound opened, and blood ran down the side of her face.

“Can you put the knife down now?” he asked, looking back at Wendy, his voice exhausted. “You won’t see that

face anymore.”

But Wendy suddenly rushed forward, grabbed Julian’s hand, and shoved it down hard.

“Ah!”

Clara’s scream tore through the hospital room.

The blade sliced from the side of her face all the way to her jaw. Flesh split open, and blood gushed out.

Julian froze. Wendy froze too. Then she covered her mouth and began to cry.

“I-I didn’t mean to! I was too scared! Julian, I didn’t mean to…”

Clara clutched her face and dropped to her knees. Her vision went black, and she collapsed.

When she woke again, Mia was crying beside her.

“Clara, it’s going to be okay. You can still build a career as a serious character actress.”

Clara stared at the ceiling, then raised her hand and touched her face.

Thick gauze covered her skin all the way down to her chin.

She closed her eyes. She had entered the industry at fifteen and spent eight years doing background work

and bit parts. She had finally made it, and now everything was ruined.

Julian walked over and reached for her hand, but she avoided him.

His hand froze in midair. After a pause, he lowered it.

“I’ll bring in the best reconstructive surgeon in D.C.” His voice was a little hoarse. “I promise there won’t be

any scars.”

Clara said nothing.

“As for Noah…” He pressed his lips together. “Don’t worry. There’s a law-school alumni dinner tonight with

judges and prosecutors. I’ll take you with me and try to get the death sentence commuted straight to life.”

Beside them, Mia whispered, “Clara, Mr. Grant is so good to you…”

Clara suddenly laughed.

So now, having Noah’s sentence reduced from death to life in prison had become Julian’s gift to her.

She looked at him, her gaze terrifyingly calm.

Julian’s heart lurched under that look. For the first time in his life, he fled in panic.

At seven that evening, Julian forced Clara to go with him.

In the banquet hall, everyone looked at her with barely concealed delight at her misfortune.

Clara followed Julian mechanically, clinking glasses with one person after another.

Then Julian’s phone rang. He glanced at the caller ID, his expression changed, and he walked aside.

A few seconds later, he hung up and strode toward the exit.

He did not even look back at Clara.

The moment he left, the crowd dropped its polite mask.

“Come on, big star. Have a drink. You’re the convicted rapist’s sister, and Mr. Grant is still that devoted to

you.”

“She’s just a D-list actress. Without Mr. Grant, who would even know her?”

“She’s still got bandages on her face. Did she get more work done?”

Clara tightened her grip on her glass and stepped back little by little.

Then someone suddenly slipped an arm around her waist.

Clara immediately pulled away, but the man grabbed her wrist.

“Too good to show me some respect?”

She looked up and recognized him. He was the judge who had once clashed with Julian, and he was also one of the judges who might be assigned to Noah’s case.

She could not afford to offend him. Her heart sank.

Just then, Mia pushed her way in.

“Clara’s drunk. I’ll take her home.”

“Gentlemen, I’ll drink with you instead. I can hold my liquor.”

She shot Clara a look. Clara tried to pull her out too, but Mia pushed her toward the door.

“You go first. Find Mr. Grant and bring him back. I’ll handle this. Noah’s case still isn’t settled.”

Clara was pushed out the door, and a powerful unease surged through her.

But when she tried to go back in, security stopped her.

Clara gritted her teeth, kicked off her high heels, and ran barefoot toward the nearest police precinct.

She fell twice along the way. When she reached the entrance of the precinct, Julian had just come out. His

gaze was dark as he stepped in front of her.

“Where is Wendy?”
