The Lawyer’s Lie Chapter 02

The Lawyer’s Lie Chapter 02

Julian’s brows tightened almost imperceptibly.

“Divorce?” His tone was flat, giving away no emotion. “This is not the time for one of your tantrums.”

A judge passing by stopped and sighed.

“Ms. Bennett, the famed Mr. Grant has already put his reputation on the line for your case. The evidence against Noah is airtight, and Wendy brought in Mr. Warren on top of that. The odds of overturning the verdict are slim. Sign the statement accepting guilt first and let the case move into automatic death-penalty review. Mr. Grant may still be able to fight to have Noah’s sentence reduced to life in prison.”

Clara clenched her fists.

Noah was deaf and nonverbal. He had suffered so much since childhood and had finally survived all of it, only to be sentenced to death now.

And these people were still telling her to stop making a scene.

She took a deep breath, her nails digging into her palms.

She wanted to shout to everyone that Noah was physically incapable of raping anyone.

But she could not do that yet. She still could not.

Julian had been willing to deliberately lose twice for Wendy and let Noah be sentenced to death.

Clara did not dare gamble on how far his feelings for Wendy would make him go.

What if Julian destroyed her evidence again for Wendy? What if he pulled strings again and made sure she lost?

Besides, Clara still did not know how Noah was doing in prison or whether he was being threatened or coerced. She could not act recklessly.

She could not let herself fall into a helpless, isolated position again.

She also wanted to see the great Mr. Grant, the man who claimed to stand for justice, lose everything.

When Julian saw her silence, he thought she had listened. He reached out and took her wrist.

“Let’s go home first. We’ll talk about the rest later.”

They had just reached the back entrance when Julian’s phone rang.

Wendy’s tearful voice came through from the other end.

After listening for a few moments, Julian comforted her. “Don’t be afraid. I’ll be there soon.”

After hanging up, he looked at Clara and paused.

“Wendy is trapped by reporters at the front entrance. She’s unstable, so I’m going to check on her. You go home first.”

Clara said nothing.

Julian glanced at her. She was too quiet today.

But he had no time to think about it. After arranging for his assistant to take her home, he turned and left.

The assistant led Clara and Mia toward Julian’s car.

The black Porsche Cayenne was parked by the curb. The assistant opened the door.

The moment Clara bent down, her peripheral vision caught the passenger seat. A pair of lace-trimmed women’s panties lay there.

Mia followed her gaze, and her face instantly flushed scarlet. “Wh-what is that?”

The assistant froze too, then stammered, “It might be a rag Ms. Wells left behind. She sometimes rides in Mr. Grant’s car.”

“A rag?” Mia’s voice went sharp. “Do you think we’re idiots?”

The words had barely left her mouth when a crowd suddenly surged forward.

“The accused rapist’s sister still has the nerve to show her face!”

In the next instant, rotten lettuce and eggs came flying at Clara like hail.

“Your brother destroyed a woman’s life, and you still have the nerve to ride in Mr. Grant’s car?”

“You dragged Mr. Grant’s good name through the mud! Let him go!”

Mia desperately shielded Clara with her own body. Pieces of rotten lettuce clung to Clara’s hair, and egg yolk ran down her cheeks.

Clara only stared at the panties on the passenger seat. Then she suddenly let out a small laugh, turned, and walked away.
