The Lawyer’s Lie Chapter 03

The Lawyer’s Lie Chapter 03

After returning to the apartment, Clara spent an hour in the shower before she came out.

By coincidence, Julian had just returned too, but Wendy was behind him, her face streaked with tears.

His gaze paused on the pile of filthy clothes on the floor, but he said nothing.

Wendy shrank behind Julian.

Julian turned slightly toward Clara, his tone calm.

“Wendy isn’t in a good mental state. I brought her here to rest for a while.”

Clara looked at the scene in front of her and caught the fleeting smugness in Wendy’s eyes.

“Get out,” she said hoarsely, nausea churning in her stomach.

Julian’s brows immediately drew together.

Wendy suddenly rushed forward and dropped to her knees in front of Clara.

“I’m sorry! This is my fault. I shouldn’t have called the police!”

“Julian spent years training me, but I still caused trouble between you two. Hit me if you want!”

She shuffled forward on her knees, her lips still moving as her voice dropped so low only Clara could hear it.

“Do you know those people just now? Julian sent them your way himself so he could get me out.”

Clara went rigid. Wendy’s voice grew even softer.

“That mute brother of yours cried so hard when they took him away. But who can he blame? He should have known his place before he tried to warn me. Who does he think he is, telling me to stay away from Julian?”

She paused, the corners of her mouth curving up.

“Clara, Julian trusts me so much. He personally made the calls. They didn’t even bother with proper procedure before they had that mute locked up.”

Clara’s ears rang, and she raised her hand to slap Wendy.

But her wrist was caught in midair. Julian held it, not hard, yet firmly enough that she could not move.

He looked at her, his voice flat and even, but Clara knew it was the first sign of his displeasure.

“Clara Bennett.”

In the past, he had only called her full name when she skipped meals during filming or spent too little of her time off with him.

Clara looked at him, her eyes filled with disappointment.

That look was so cold that something shifted in Julian’s gaze.

He was about to say something when Wendy suddenly screamed, “No! Don’t come near me!”

She curled up on the floor, trembling all over, her eyes locked on a photo on the wall.

It was the first photo Clara and Noah had ever taken together. Both of them were smiling brightly.

“He’s watching me! He’s going to hurt me!” Wendy babbled incoherently.

Julian released Clara and immediately helped Wendy up.

Wendy huddled in his arms, shaking as she said, “Take it away! Please take it away…”

Julian glanced at the photo and removed the frame from the wall.

“Put it away for now,” he told Clara.

But Wendy screamed again, lunged forward, and smashed the frame on the floor.

With a sharp crash, the glass shattered.

Clara failed to stop her in time, and her heart seemed to shatter along with it.

She hurriedly bent down to pick up the photo.

Julian frowned and wanted to say they had copies of the photo.

But Wendy screamed again and smashed every photo of Noah within sight.

Julian did not stop her. He even helped her reach the photos she could not get to.

Then Wendy pointed at another photo. It was Clara and Julian’s wedding portrait.

“She looks like Noah!” Wendy trembled all over. “I’m scared…”

This time, Julian’s hand froze in midair.

In the photo, Clara was wearing a white wedding gown, smiling with pure happiness.

Julian covered Wendy’s eyes with his hand. “Then don’t look. I’ll take you away.”

Clara suddenly laughed.

“Get out.” She reached out, ripped the wedding portrait from the wall, and smashed it hard against the floor.

Julian frowned, his lips pressed into a thin line, and said, “Why pick a fight with someone who’s ill?”

“Get out!” Clara pointed at him, trembling all over. “All of you, get out!”

Julian picked Wendy up and quickly left.

Clara collapsed onto the floor and suddenly remembered the first case Julian had ever handled for her.

Back then, she had still been a struggling D-list actress, trapped by her talent agency in a predatory contract that practically owned her.

Julian helped her win the lawsuit to break that contract, and the case made his name overnight.

At the celebration dinner, he had been a little drunk. For once, he kissed her forehead in front of everyone.

“Clara, from now on, I’ll protect you,” he said. “No one gets to bully you.”

Clara forced a faint smile and walked into the study.
