I was stunned.

I didn’t know Ethan Hale well.

He was famous for being cold and untouchable.

I was still dazed as I got into the car.

“I called you today, but you hung up.”

It hit me that the call this morning had been from him.

“I thought it was better to tell you in person.”

“My mother recently visited the store where you work. She noticed you look a lot like she did when she was young.”

I stared at him blankly, not understanding what he was implying.

“I was adopted.”

“My parents once had a biological daughter, the same age as me, who went missing when she was three.”

I nodded. “And then?”

“My mother found a chance to get a strand of your hair and had a DNA test done. It confirms you’re the daughter they lost all those years ago.”

“So, Rhea, you’re my sister.”

It was like a bolt of lightning.

It hit me so hard I stood frozen, unable to speak for a long time.

Afraid I wouldn’t believe him, he put the test report in my hand.

Before long, the car stopped outside my shabby apartment building.

He didn’t rush me out.

The car was quiet, only the patter of rain on the windows.

Beat after beat, unsettling.

“Mom and Dad are overseas on a project and can’t get away right now.”

“When they come back, they’ll hold a big homecoming banquet for you.”

I sat in Ethan Hale’s car for an hour.

By the time I had barely processed the news, the rain had stopped.

As I got out, he suddenly called after me.

“Rhea, now that you know where you come from, are you happy?”

I stood in the wind and thought about it.

“Like winning the Powerball. Happy, but… it feels too unreal.”

He laughed quietly.

After a long moment, he sighed, his voice so soft it seemed to dissolve into the mist after the rain.

“That’s good.”

“But why did it have to be you, of all people, who turns out to be my sister?”

His voice was too low for me to hear.

He didn’t repeat it. He just waved at me.

“Go home.”

I had only walked a few steps

when I looked up and saw Sebastian standing at the entrance to my building.

He wore an old jacket washed pale.

“Rhea, why are you so late? I couldn’t reach you either.”

“I was worried, so I came down and waited for you.”

As he spoke, his gaze moved past me to the vanity plate with four nines behind me.
