The Hairclip He Gave Me Was a Free Gift from Her Jewelry Spree Chapter 05

That night at the mall, my phone kept buzzing.

Message after message from Sebastian popped up.

“Rhea, don’t be mad.”

“There were so many people at school. I was worried that hitting her would hurt your reputation.”

“Don’t break up with me over this. I’ll be miserable.”

I turned off the screen and didn’t reply to any of them.

When my shift ended, the sky looked like it had split open, thunder and rain crashing down.

The bus had stopped running, and cabs were too expensive in the rain.

I was less than two miles from my apartment, so I gripped my umbrella and ran into the rain.

The wind blew the rain sideways. The umbrella was useless, and I was soaked in seconds.

Sebastian messaged me again.

“Rhea, are you off work?”

“I wanted to pick you up, but the rain made my leg hurt too much.”

“I’m going to the clinic to get medicine. Go home first.”

The light at the intersection had just turned red.

Three steps away, a black Maybach was also waiting for the green light.

The window was half down.

I saw Sebastian resting his hand on the wheel, looking relaxed.

Charlotte sat in the passenger seat.

Sebastian frowned and reminded her.

“Next time, wear less perfume. She has a sharp nose.”

Charlotte glanced at his phone.

“Still hasn’t replied? She’s breaking up over something this small. Guess your charm isn’t what it used to be?”

Sebastian bent his index finger and tapped the wheel lightly.

That was his habit when he was annoyed.

“Don’t talk nonsense.”

“Girls like to throw little tantrums. It’s normal. I’ll soothe her.”

“Rhea is crazy about me. She’s not going to turn my world upside down.”

The car’s interior light was dim. Charlotte looked down at her manicure.

“True. If it weren’t for me, how would a poor thing like her ever meet someone on your level?”

“She should count herself lucky to be with you.”

“But she went too far. She slapped my face so badly that my blind date with Ethan Hale fell through.”

“I wonder if that Hale heir is upset. My dad worked so hard to build that connection.”

The light turned green, and I walked in front of the car.

Sebastian must have seen me.

He saw me soaked through, my umbrella bent out of shape by the wind.

I suddenly remembered another rainy day like this.

We huddled under one umbrella, and I held his arm, sighing.

“I wish we had a car.”

“Then we could get in and out of a garage and never get soaked.”

Back then, he tilted the umbrella toward me again and again, and said softly.

“We will.”

So he already had one.

He just never wanted me to know.

Headlights suddenly swung over, blinding me.

The Maybach sped past, splashing dirty water all over me.

I hugged my sleeves and thought about Charlotte’s last words.

We shared the same surname, so why were Ethan Hale’s life and mine so different?

He was a prince of New York’s old-money elite, born lucky.

And I had grown up in the foster system.

Just as I was lost in thought, a car stopped in front of me.

I didn’t know what kind of luck I had today, running into luxury cars one after another.

I glanced at it and was about to walk past.

The window rolled down.

Ethan Hale looked up at me.

“Rhea, get in.”

“I’ll drive you.”
