I found it almost funny.

“A $2 hair clip. Did I let people walk all over me so easily that you think I only deserve something like this?”

A flash of shock crossed his face.

Then he went cold and demanded.

“Rhea, since when did you become so materialistic?”

“No wonder you didn’t get the exchange spot. Aren’t greedy, money-grubbing people exactly the ones with

questionable character?”

“Don’t think getting into Ethan Hale’s car means you can climb into the Hale family.”

“The Hales are an old-money family with rules deeper than the sea. Don’t even dream about it.”

I closed the door instead of arguing with him.

Sebastian probably found it boring and stormed out, slamming the door.

I didn’t see him again for days.

The kitchen door was half open.

I saw Sebastian sitting in a booth.

Without the shabby, frugal act he put on for me, he looked like nothing but a spoiled rich boy.

Around him sat a circle of trust-fund friends he usually hung out with.

Someone laughed and egged him on.

“Seb, now you can finally see what Rhea is really like, right?”

“She’s so good at playing innocent. She had you fooled before.”

“I say stop wasting time on her. It’s about time to close the net.”

Charlotte gave Sebastian advice.

“On your birthday, invite the press and livestream the whole thing.”

“Then reveal your real identity in front of Rhea.”

“She’s so materialistic. Once she learns you’re the eldest Shaw son, she’ll probably lose her mind with

excitement.”

“Then you dump her on the spot, leaving her with nothing. Let the cameras catch her throwing a tantrum.”

A guy nearby sucked in a breath.

“We only said she should get dumped. Do we have to go this far?”

“Online harassment is terrifying. Rumors could destroy her.”

Charlotte angrily tugged at his sleeve.

“Don’t you treat me like a sister anymore? Why are you siding with an outsider?”

“Don’t forget how she bullied me in high school.”

“Or is Rhea so good at charming people that she’s gotten to you too?”

The guy flushed. “Don’t talk nonsense.”

“This is up to Seb anyway.”

I looked at Sebastian.

Through all the noise, he stayed quiet.

Head down, he slowly turned the wooden beads around his wrist.

It was a bracelet I had bought him when I dragged him to get a lucky charm not long after his leg healed.

I said it would keep our love strong forever.

He rubbed the beads, lost in thought.

After a long moment, he said one word in a low voice.

“Fine.”

The moment he spoke, the cord of the bracelet snapped with a “pop.”

Dark brown beads rolled everywhere across the floor.

A waiter quickly bent down to pick them up and dumped them all into the trash.

I stood behind the door, looking at the dull beads in the trash, and suddenly wanted to laugh.

I laughed until my eyes got wet.

His heart was truly cruel.
