The Day the Don’s Heiress Lost Her Womb Chapter 07 A Billion-Dollar Rejection

After that day, Kane refused to leave Eastbridge.

He rented out the entire penthouse floor of the Grand Regent Hotel across from the lab. Then/he locked down the block. His plainclothes men stood at every corner, pretending to be passersby while watching the lab entrance.

At seven every morning, he arrived with breakfast.

At ten every night, he left with a coat.

He did not shout. He did not force his way in.

He only stood beneath the trees by the gate and watched me through the glass while I worked.

His men stood behind him all day.

No one sat.

No one spoke.

I never looked his way.

The lab staff avoided talking about him. Whenever they saw him from a distance, they changed routes. A few new interns did not know who he was. They whispered that he looked like some devoted lover, handsome but terrifying.

Only I knew what that “devoted lover” had done to me.

Once, after working through the night, I collapsed in the lab the next morning.

My coworkers rushed me to the break room and gave me medicine.

Through the haze, I heard shouting outside.

When I opened my eyes, Kane was at the lab door, trying to break in. Two security guards were holding him back. His eyes were red, and he had a gun pressed near one guard’s head.

“Move. I’m going to see her. If anything happens to her, every one of you dies.”

His men drew their guns too.

The guards did not back down.

The whole place felt one second away from bloodshed.

Then Professor Thorne arrived.

His voice was ice-cold.

“Try it, and the Wood family loses every medical supply line it has.”

Only then did Kane lower the gun.

He stood outside the glass like all the strength had drained out of him, staring toward the break room until I woke up.

Then he left quietly.

A few days later, a storm hit.

Rain slammed against the ground, hard enough to blur the whole world.

I thought he would finally stay away.

But when I looked up, he was there.

Soaked from head to toe.

His black trench coat stuck to his body, making him look even thinner. Wet hair clung to his face. Water ran from his jaw and pooled around his shoes.

He was holding a cup of hot coffee under his coat, protecting it from the rain.

He stood there like that for hours.

His men held umbrellas behind him.

No one dared put one over him.

At ten that night, when I left the building, he was still waiting.

I walked out with my umbrella.

He came over at once.

“Elena, it’s raining. Let me drive you back.”

His voice was blocked with a cold. He kept coughing.

He offered me the coffee.

It was still warm.

I did not take it.

I walked past him.

He caught up and stepped into my path.

Then he pulled a thick stack of papers from inside his coat, careful not to let the rain touch them.

Asset transfer agreements.

Wood Manor.

Wood

Five office towers downtown.

A private island off the southern coast.

The Eastbank docks.

Seven underground casinos.

Forty percent of the Wood family’s arms shares.

All of it added up to more than 10 billion dollars.

Every document already carried his signature and red thumbprint.

“All yours.” His eyes were low and pleading. “Come back with me, and I’ll give you everything. I’ll even give you the Godfather’s seat. The Wood family will answer to you. I don’t want any of it. I only want you alive.”

I gave a small laugh and threw the papers back.

They scattered into the rain.

The pages soaked through quickly, ink running into dark smears.

“Kane, I’m dying. Why would I care about this?”

“I only want to do my research in peace and live as long as I can. Stop coming here.”

I walked past him under my umbrella.

Behind me, his sobs were swallowed by the rain.

I did not turn back.
