The Day the Don’s Heiress Lost Her Womb Chapter 02 The Housekeeper’s Malice
Getting money from Vera was harder than prying open a vault. When I brought her the prescription, she did not even glance at it. “500,000 dollars for miscarriage recovery? Madam, don’t use my lack of pregnancy experience against me. Since when does recovery cost that much?” She pushed the form back. “500,000 dollars is not a small sum. I need your doctor’s signature, the import clearance for the medication, and a detailed charge list for every injection. Miss one document, and I can’t stamp it.” I told her it was emergency medication. The import papers had to go through the hospital system first. I could submit them later. She covered her mouth in fake surprise. “Oh, I see. I’ve always been healthy, so I really wouldn’t know how expensive miscarriage treatment gets.” Then her smile sharpened. “But the family’s accounting rules are strict. Without proof on paper, money can vanish too easily. Why don’t you ask the hospital for an emergency certificate first?” She looked me over, her voice full of poison. “Of course, doctors can be bribed too. I’m not accusing you, Madam. I’m just the Wood family’s housekeeper. I have to protect the Godfather’s name.” She stalled on purpose until the treatment window closed. By the time I gathered every document and returned to the hospital with the money, even the best doctor could not help me. Hatred swallowed me then. But under it, there was relief. Maybe I should have given up on Kane much earlier. So when Vera’s new post appeared on the family forum, I felt nothing. In the photos, Kane wore tactical gear. He stood behind her, holding her arms, teaching her to shoot. I took a screenshot. Then I liked the post. Anything involving Vera always reached Kane fast. His message came almost immediately. “Elena, why did you like that? It was just regular training. Stop making trouble. What kind of wife gets jealous of a woman I treat like a little sister? “And don’t undo the like. That’ll make you look petty. Leave a comment praising her, too. Let people see you’re generous. Be sensible. Be good.” I did not want to answer him. But the anger sat in my chest and would not move. So I did what he asked. “Vera, you really do manage everything. Kane’s money, Kane’s people, and now even my personal authorization stamp. Anyone outside the family would think you were Mrs. Wood. Keep saving his money so carefully. When you finally push me out and take my place, it’ll all be yours anyway.” I posted it, threw my phone aside, and started packing. The phone buzzed across the desk nonstop. Before, Kane never needed to call to find me. Wood Manor was full of the bugs and trackers he had installed. Too bad I had ripped them out last night and flushed them away. I tapped the newest voice message. Kane was shouting so hard his voice cracked. “Elena! Have you lost your damn mind? Delete that right now!” I did not bother replying. I turned the phone off. The room finally went quiet. Packing took less than ten minutes. This manor was supposedly built for the Godfather’s wife. Yet everything valuable was locked by Vera in a study that required a high-level passcode. My jewelry. My gowns. Even my own credit cards. All of them were in her hands. For three years, I had lived like a prisoner. My suitcase held only a few cheap old clothes. Only then did I finally see the truth.
