The Day the Don’s Heiress Lost Her Womb Chapter 06

The Day the Don’s Heiress Lost Her Womb Chapter 06 The Desperate Godfather

A month passed like that.

The research finally moved forward.

Our first batch of targeted drugs was synthesized.

I took the first injection myself.

Professor Thorne and the whole team stood around me, tense enough that no one seemed to breathe.

The results came back better than expected.

Three days later, my cough eased. The abdominal pain stopped coming so often. At the follow-up, the doctor said the cancer cells had slowed their spread.

At least three more months.

That was what I had gained.

The lab exploded with cheers.

And just when I thought life was turning toward the light, Kane found me.

That afternoon, I had just finished one experiment and was sorting data at my computer.

A security guard rushed into the lab, face white.

“Dr. Winston, we have a problem. Armed men are at the gate. A lot of them. We can’t hold them back.”

My pen stopped.

So he had found me.

I had known this day would come.

Professor Thorne’s movements could not stay hidden forever, If Kane kept digging, sooner or later he i would follow the trail here.

I put down the pen, smoothed my white coat, and walked out.

Outside the building, more than a dozen black armored sedans blocked the street.

Kane stood at the front.

His black trench coat was wrinkled. His hair was a mess. His eyes were red, his jaw covered in dark stubble. his cheeks sunken.

One month.

That was all it took to make him look ten years older.

Behind him stood more than twenty guards in black. Their faces were hard, their hands close to their guns. Students passing by took long detours and watched from a distance.

The moment Kane saw me, his dull eyes snapped alive.

Like a drowning man seeing shore.

He hurried over, stumbling once on the way.

“Elena…” His voice was ruined and rough. “I finally found you. I looked for you for a month. I was losing my mind.”

I did not move. “How did you find me?”

“I checked every place Elias Thorne went. He comes to this lab three times a month. I knew you had to be here.” He looked at me with naked panic in his eyes. “Come home with me. Please. I changed the manor. Everything you hated is gone. I found the best cancer specialists in the world. They’re waiting in Ravenport day and night. They can cure you. I swear.”

“I was wrong, Elena. I’ll never ignore you again. I’ll never trust anyone over you again. I’ll listen to whatever you say. I’ll do anything you want. Just don’t leave me again.”

I looked at him.

Nothing moved inside me.

No hatred.

No anger.

Only a dead kind of calm.

“I don’t have a home,” I said. “Wood Manor was never my home. I’m fine here. Leave. Don’t come back. Don’t interrupt my work.”

I turned to go.

“Elena!” he shouted behind me, his voice breaking. “Do you hate me that much? Look at me. I’m already like this. Can’t you forgive me once?”

I kept walking.

Behind me, his fist slammed into a car door.

Metal shrieked as it caved in.

Then came his muffled sob, low and broken, like an animal in pain.

But so what?

When I lay on the operating table and called him seventeen times, he never picked up.

When I knelt in Vera’s office for seven days with that request form, he never came.

When the doctor told me I had one month left, he was not there.

He was celebrating a new arms route with Vera.

He was teaching her to shoot.

He was calling me immature.

Calling me unreasonable.

Now none of it mattered.

He was too late.
