The Day the Don’s Heiress Lost Her Womb Chapter 08 Kneeling in the Snow

Kane still stayed

He came to the lab gate every day, but he no longer spoke to me. He no longer brought breakfast, coffee,

or coats.

He only watched.

Quietly.

Sometimes I looked up and met his eyes.

Pain. Regret. Despair.

For a second, my chest would feel tight.

Then I would look away and return to my work.

I could not soften.

If I softened now, everything I had survived would lose its meaning.

One night, heavy snow fell until dawn.

The next morning, the lab entrance was blocked.

Kane knelt in the snow outside the door.

Snow covered his shoulders. Ice clung to his hair and brows. His lips were purple, his face almost gray.

More than twenty men knelt behind him in a straight line.

They had been there all night.

The security guard was too frightened to open the door. He called me, voice shaking.

“Dr. Winston, please come out. They’ve been kneeling all night. Someone’s going to die.”

When I arrived, Kane swayed and nearly fell into the snow.

His men rushed to help.

He shoved them off.

“If Madam won’t forgive me, I won’t get up.”

His voice was barely there. His lips had cracked open from the cold, and blood marked them red.

The lead crew boss saw me and immediately bowed his head low, almost to the snow.

“Mrs. Wood, please forgive the Godfather. He’s been living worse than dead this whole month. He knows he was wrong. Give him one chance. If you won’t forgive him, we’ll stay here until we freeze.”

Students had gathered nearby, whispering and pointing.

I looked at Kane kneeling in the snow.

Nothing stirred.

“Get them up,” I told the crew boss coldly. “I won’t forgive him. It won’t matter if you kneel here until you die.”

“Elena!” Kane lifted his bloodshot eyes. “Tell me what to do. Anything. I’ll do anything. Do you want me to grovel?”

“Stop the act,” I said. “Even if you die begging here, I still won’t forgive you.”

I turned and went inside.

The door shut behind me.

Professor Thorne found me later by the centrifuge while I was processing samples.

“You don’t feel bad for him at all?” He leaned against the lab bench. “He was out there all night. He’s hypothermic. If he keeps this up, he’ll die.”

I shook my head and kept working.

“Too late. If he had shown even a little of this sincerity when I begged him, I would never have ended up here. What’s the point now? He’s doing it to make himself feel less guilty.”

Professor Thorne sighed.

“I told his men if they cause another scene here, I’ll cut off the Wood family’s medical supply lines. They have three days to leave Eastbridge. If they don’t, their clotting drugs and antibiotics stop.”

I said nothing.

Through the glass, I watched Kane’s men carry him away.

Even then, he kept struggling to look back at the lab.

His lips moved again and again.

My name.

After that, Kane never came back to the lab gate.

My life finally became quiet again.
