The Bullet Comments Called Me Stupid And Doomed Chapter 09

The Bullet Comments Called Me Stupid And Doomed Chapter 09

Trent suggested Italian. I shut that down and picked a steakhouse instead — one Julian and I used to go to all the time.

Because the universe had a sick sense of humor, Julian walked in twenty minutes later — with a woman. We locked eyes for half a second. Then we both looked away, like we’d practiced it.

I expected him to leave. Instead, they slipped into a private booth.

I was almost certain she was the female lead. I couldn’t stop stealing glances. She wasn’t stunning, but she carried herself like she knew exactly who she was. Everything about her radiated competence — the kind of woman who got things done. Definitely the female lead.

I couldn’t focus after that. My head was a mess.

Trent didn’t notice. He was too busy throwing his money around and bragging about how every one of his exes was gorgeous. Every time he mentioned those girls, my blood ran cold. Knowing where they’d ended up — sold off to Los Cuervos — it took everything I had not to lose it.

I swallowed my rage, kept feeding him compliments, and made sure his glass was never empty. Once he was drunk enough, I started digging. Nothing too obvious — why’d you break up, are any of your exes still in town?

He was too far gone to be careful. He laughed and said they were all overseas now, “working for big players,” and that I’d never have to worry about them showing up.

I pushed a little more. Why overseas?

He grinned — actually grinned — and said he’d sold them. Then he leaned in and asked if that scared me.

I sat on my hands so I wouldn’t smash a bottle over his head.

After dinner, I called him a car.

I was halfway to my car when Julian came out of nowhere and grabbed my wrist. “That guy is bad news.”

I looked down at his hand on my wrist, then up at his face. His jaw was tight.

“Let go.”

He let go but didn’t leave. He followed me all the way to my car, talking the entire time. “I don’t know who he is, but something’s off about him. Keep seeing that guy, and you’re going to get hurt.”

I spun around. “And what’s that got to do with you? We’re divorced, remember?”

Julian froze.

Before he could recover, I was in the car and gone.

I didn’t go home. I drove straight to the police station and reported Trent for suspected human trafficking. I handed over the recording I’d made — every word of his drunken confession.

It wasn’t enough to convict him, but it was enough to get their attention. They said they’d look into it and told me to act normal around Trent — don’t tip him off.

[Wait, when did the side character get smart?? She figured out Trent AND went to the cops?]

[This isn’t following the plot summary at all! If the side character knows Trent is dangerous, how does she still end up in Los Cuervos?]

[The side character hasn’t done anything that bad. Why does she have to get trafficked?]

[She’s secretly having the male lead’s baby to sabotage him and the FL. How is that not bad enough?]

[Okay, that’s shady, but the FL stole her husband first. If the side character is trash, the FL isn’t any better!]

[The ML and FL are destined for each other. The side character was never even in the running.]

[Oh, so we’re going with “the one who isn’t loved is automatically the side piece”? Really?]

[Am I wrong?]

The comments spiraled into a full-blown war. I watched them scroll by like reality TV.
