The Bullet Comments Called Me Stupid And Doomed Chapter 08

The nausea followed me all the way to work, but it was manageable. I could live with it.

What I couldn’t live with was the luxury car that clipped mine in the parking lot outside the office. The driver was some young guy. He offered to settle it on the spot — no insurance.

It was barely a scratch and I was already late, so I snapped a few photos, swapped numbers with him, and headed inside. I’d barely sat down at my desk when he sent me twenty thousand dollars.

The scratch was a thousand-dollar fix, tops. I needed the money — badly — but I wasn’t about to pocket nineteen grand I hadn’t earned. After a little back-and-forth, I settled on five thousand.

My company didn’t have an official policy against pregnant employees — but everyone knew how it actually worked. The second they found out, they’d make your life miserable until you quit. I needed to hang on for as long as possible, so the pregnancy stayed my secret.

Luckily, the baby cooperated. The worst of the morning sickness stayed outside office hours. If a wave hit while I was at my desk, I could grit my teeth through it.

The guy from the parking lot — Trent Vargas — kept asking me to dinner after that. I had zero interest in men right now, and I wasn’t going to string some guy along just to use him as a rebound. I turned him down every time.

The afternoon our divorce was finalized, Trent was waiting for me outside my office building, holding a bouquet of roses. “Stella.” He held the roses out, smiling. “Let me take you to dinner. Just once.”

I was already getting ready to say no when the comments flickered back — the first time in weeks.

[This pig-bothering scam is moving way too slowly. He still hasn’t reeled the ex-wife in? When is she finally getting lured to Los Cuevos?]

[Honestly, the ex-wife doesn’t deserve to die over this. And this con artist has already hurt other girls — can someone catch this guy already?]

[The scammer is just a plot device. He’ll probably get caught right after he sells the side character out.]

So that was what he was.

I smiled, took the roses from his hands, and looked him straight in the eye. “Sure.”
