The Bullet Comments Called Me Stupid And Doomed Chapter 02

The Bullet Comments Called Me Stupid And Doomed Chapter 02

I retreated to the bedroom and crawled under the covers, pressing my face into the sheets so he wouldn’t hear. I didn’t know what was wrong with me lately. Everything set me off — the smallest thing could send me over the edge.

Growing up, it was just me and my mom. Seven years ago, she was diagnosed with terminal cancer.

We threw everything at it. Nothing worked. She went downhill fast. Even at the end, she was worrying about me — her pretty, clueless daughter who could barely take care of herself. Before she died, she asked Julian to look after me.

Julian was a foster kid my mom had taken under her wing — paid for his schooling, believed in him when no one else did.

He’d been brilliant, driven, the kind of person who earned every break he got. He started his own company straight out of college, and back then, everything was finally taking off.

I’d known about Julian for years. And yeah — I had a crush on him. A serious one. So when he sat at her bedside and promised to take care of me, I didn’t say no.

After she was gone, we just… happened. And Julian was good to me. Really good. Patient with my tantrums, forgiving of every flaw, willing to put up with every way I made his life harder.

So I thought he actually liked me back.

But according to those comments, he didn’t. The marriage was just a debt — a promise to a dying woman. Nothing more.

The thought hit me like a fist to the chest. If all he wanted was to honor that promise, he didn’t have to marry me to do it. There were a hundred other ways to settle that kind of debt.

So why go through with it? Why marry someone you don’t even have feelings for?

The man had to be out of his mind.

Then again — I might not be the sharpest person alive, but I wasn’t a complete idiot either. I knew he was going to make it big. And I was absolutely not going to step aside and hand that future to the female lead on a silver platter.

He could have his divorce — once he could afford to make it worth my while.

And the female lead? She could get in line. I didn’t owe her a damn thing.

Julian came back a short while later. He stood at the edge of the bed for a moment, and when he finally spoke, his voice was perfectly even.

“I’ve got nothing to give you right now. A divorce wouldn’t leave you with anything. If I get the chance down the line, I’ll make it up to you.”

A pause. Then:

“The debts are mine. All of them. They won’t touch you.”

I lifted my head, jaw clenched. “I’m not divorcing you. Don’t even think about it.”

Something shifted behind his eyes — like he wanted to say more. But when he spoke, his voice had gone flat. “Suit yourself. When you change your mind, just say the word.”

He turned and walked out without looking back.

He didn’t say it outright, but I knew — asking for a divorce had cut him. Just like the comments said, whatever warmth he’d had left for me was probably gone.

But the evidence was gone. What was I supposed to do?

I’d just have to dig in and refuse to leave. If there was one thing I was world-class at, it was being unapologetically stubborn.

[The male lead is already heartbroken over the ex-wife. Divorce is coming soon, I can feel it.]

[Not so fast. The male lead is the loyal, stand-up type — even if he doesn’t like her, he’d never force a divorce on her. And from the way she’s acting right now? This isn’t ending anytime soon.]

[Oh, give it time. She’s been pampered her whole life — she can’t handle real hardship. She’s superficial too. Wave something shiny in front of her and she’ll bite. Won’t take long.]

I rolled my eyes so hard it hurt.

Fine — my mom spoiled me. I’ll own that. But superficial? Absolutely not. If I were superficial, I wouldn’t have stuck with Julian through his bankruptcy.

If that stupid photo hadn’t sent me over the edge, I never would’ve brought up divorce in the first place!

Judgmental little trolls. Every last one of them.
