I turned to leave, but he grabbed my arm. “Wait!”

I stopped, impatience flaring within me.

He looked entirely hollowed out, his cheekbones sharp against pale skin.

Even his expensive coat couldn’t hide his emaciated frame.

“Sienna… I thought you died.” His voice choked up. “Thank God you’re alive.”

I met his gaze, my eyes cold. “Disappointed?”

“Never! I… I’m so happy.”

I let out a sharp, mocking laugh. “Anything else? I need to get back.”

He rushed on. “Can we start over? Please?”

I fell silent for a moment, my tone calm but cutting. “Start over? Have you forgotten you have a legal mate? And she is carrying your pup.”

“You and I don’t even have a mate bond certificate. We’re strangers, plain and simple.”

“The baby is gone,” he blurted out. “I am so sorry I put you in danger…”

I cut him off. “Did you ever feel a single shred of regret while enjoying your double life? Did you ever truly consider me your mate?”

He flinched. “Sara lied to me! She wasn’t who she pretended to be…”

“So if she actually were innocent, you would have happily kept playing house with her while leaving me to rot? You only came back because your fantasy shattered.”

He had no answer.

I pulled my arm free. “Don’t come looking for me again.”

But he kept showing up at the training grounds, sometimes waiting for hours.

Eventually, Julian started driving me home, and Ryan’s visits began to taper off.

One morning, I laced up my boots—and sudden, blinding pain shot through my sole.

I crashed heavily onto the floor, blood seeping through the white lining of my boot.

My heart hammered against my ribs.

I couldn’t go through this again.

I didn’t want to be on crutches again.

When I came to in the hospital, Julian was sitting beside me.

“Someone put a silver blade in your boot.”

I closed my eyes.

The door burst open. Ryan dragged Sara in and threw her to the floor.
