On Friday, I asked the manager for leave to get the abortion. 

I sat in the hospital hallway, waiting my turn. 

A pregnant woman next to me asked. 

“Why are you here alone for an abortion? Did you talk to the 

father?” 

I said quietly, “No.” 

She tried to talk me out of it. “Young people shouldn’t be so 

rash. Talk to the baby’s father first.” 

“I’ve seen so many like you- get an abortion alone out of anger, then regret it later.” 

I smiled. 

“But I don’t love him anymore.” 

“I don’t want anything to do with him ever again.” 

“Keeping a baby from someone I don’t love isn’t fair to the 

baby… or to me.” 

Just then, I thought I saw a familiar figure not far away. 

I turned- nothing was there. 

Imagining things? 

When my name was called, I walked into the operating room. 

I lay on the table. They gave me anesthesia. I slowly lost 

control of my body, my mind fading. 

Just then, someone stepped closer. 

Was it the doctor? 

The footsteps got nearer. 

I forced my eyes open. 

I couldn’t tell what I saw, but a cold chill ran down my spine. 

Then pure terror. 

It wasn’t the doctor who walked in. 

It was Pierce. 

I tried to move, tried to run- but the anesthesia had 

paralyzed me. 

I was like a lamb waiting to be slaughtered. 

The last thing I remembered before blacking out was Pierce leaning down, covering my eyes with his hand. 

“Baby, stop being silly. We’re going home.”
